Just received my T60p (2623-DDU) this week, over a month late.

All seems to be well with the exception of inserting a second 100 gb 7200 rpm drive in the ultrabay adapter. When inserted, Windows generates a blue screen error and halts.

Error listed is:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00040000, 0x0000001C, 0x00000001, 0x804E1BE8)

Running the bios hard drive test returns no erros!

T60p w/ 2 gb ram, 100 gb hdd
Norton SystemWorks 2006 installed

Has anyone successfully inserted a hdd in the ultrabay of this unit?

Has anyone attempted to and encountered the same issue? Was there a resolution?

Hmmm; have you tried booting up with the second HDD in the ultrabay? Also, what is the model number of the HDD and the maker?

fix this by changing a setting in the BIOS to set the HD to "compatibility mode"

Do you have Windows, or some other operating system installed on the 2nd hard drive?

EDIT: 2nd question. Is the second hard drive SATA or PATA?

Attempted booting with it installed and allowing Windows to boot entirely and then install. Both methods resulted in blue screen.

The drive is the Lenovo direct replacement, p/n 39T2614. It's a Hitachi p/n 0a26568, SATA 7200 rpm. Ironically it's identical to the primary hd which makes the issue all the more curious.

There is presently nothing on the drive, to my knowledge. It's brand new and intended for a data drive. Yes, I need 200 gb to carry all the data I need on the road. My previous A31p had a 60 gb primary and a 80 gb secondary and was pretty full.

It has to be a PATA drive, if I recall correctly, to work in the 2nd HDD adapter in the ultrabay.

According to the web site and the IBM technicians, the X60's and T60's both require SATA.

They are clearly listed this way when the accessory site generates the list of potential accessories for this unit.

I assume the hard drive adapter you have is the following (part# 40Y8725)?

Do you have the following driver installed?
Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver for Windows 2000, XP - ThinkPad T60, T60p, X60, X60s

Can you boot up into Safe Mode by pressing F8 at the beginning of the boot sequence?

Those are for the main HDD; the X60 doesn't have an ultrabay.

There was a thread on here not too long ago about what HDD you should get for the Ultrabay adapter.

I am quite well aware that the T60 uses SATA HDDs for the primary drive. We are talking about the Ultrabay, not the primary HDD.

That Ultrabay still uses the EIDE interface, not SATA; so it has to have a PATA drive in it unless you want to enable compabtibility mode in the BIOS for it.

The SATA ultrabay that GomJabbar posted a link to is different and appears to be for SATA HDDs only; which means there are now two 2nd HDD Ultrabay adapters for the T60. Ones that are PATA supported and ones that are SATA supported. Both appear to use EIDE in the end-connector to the Thinkpad.

Perhaps this does not really solve your problem,
but I used both SATA and PATA drives in my T60p

The PATA is still in my T40p ultrabay adapter with a 100GBytes Seagate Momentus IDE, I just push it in T60p and at it works.
The SATA is the Hitachi 7K100 with the new SATA ultrabay adapter. Also this works without problems.

If I would have known that the old IDE drive works, I would never have spent the money for the new adapter and the new drive.

The drive is SATA and it is in the Ultrabay adapter.

It is now working, and it's hard to understand. There were two updated posted and dated 5/16. One was a help update and one was a keyboard customization update. I downloaded and installed these updates just prior to attempting some on these suggestions. I was going to change between AHCI and Compatibility mode, when I missed the bios and windows started. I let the boot finish and it didn't blue screen.

It would appear that one of these updates addressed the issue, and I find it hard to believe that it could be the help file.

A couple of notes on my experiences with the T60p. The ultrabay will accept both a SATA hard drive carrier and a PATA hard driver carrier. The BIOS has a setting for AHCI mode (sp?) and Compatibility mode. If you have a PATA drive - you need to set it to compatibility mode instead of AHCI mode in the BIOS. The dedicated hard drive bay is a SATA drive interface.

The Intel 82801GBM SATA Controller (ICH7 Document is here - (http://download.intel.com/design/chipse ... 701302.pdf - pg 46 and pg 47 are of interest) seems to have two SATA channels and a standard dual channel PCI IDE Controller as well.

F12 will get you to boot mode. If you are using an already partitioned drive - make sure you have Norton GoBack disabled - it creates some unknown type 55 partition for some drives (to prevent viruses from overwriting the MBR).

The onboard controller is a different animal from what I've seen previously. Under some conditions - the intel matrix drivers for some reason don't seem to auto update the Ultra DMA modes on the fly and default back to Ultra DMA mode 2. This new controller is somewhat strange and I probably need to explore it more.

However, my drives boot well in the ultrabay - Anyway - that's been my experience

Ok. i read this thread and several other about T60 2nd HDD adapter. I have a HItachi 7k60 PATA HD ready to plug in the second drive to install Ubuntu on.

I saw on ibm website accessories that they have the adapter for T60 to use with SATA drive. The part number is 40Y8725.

I can't find the same adapter for T60 that uses PATA..is one exists?
Or people are using T40 HDD adapter to put PATA in their T60? Is 62P4554 the one they use?

The standard T40 adapter PATA will work. It won't fit a 12.5 mm drive but will accept the 9.5 mm height drives.

a31guy, I think your tip about setting the BIOS to compatibility mode is only an issue if booting from the drive, correct? I've put plenty of PATA drives through my T60p and haven't had a blip out of it. I did have trouble booting a SATA drive (internal) that had been ghosted from a PATA drive until I set to compatability because the AHCI (?) drivers weren't installed in that Windows image.

I was under the impression that compatability mode only impacted SATA drives, but I've not tried to boot from a PATA drive in the caddy yet so I'll take your word on that.
