buying decision

Dear members,

I am a resident of the Netherlands and planning to acquire a T60p. I have two questions:

1) after reading a lot of threads, I noticed that there are some superior keyboards and screens (is this a fact or just preference). If fact what would be the perfect setup (from a tech point of view) if money would be no issue)?

2) I do not want to pay retail prices, and am no student anymore. Where should I buy?

Thanks in advance!!

Greetings and welcome to the forum!

1) The differences between the screens and keyboards that you read about here are very minor. I have had them all and can say first hand, that they are all good and you would not be disappointed.

As ThinkPad users we enjoy a very high quality computer. Since we don't have anything else to complain about, we tend to be critical of the smallest things. :)

2) Try an online reseller like:

www.euclidcomputers.com
www.costcentral.com

Hope this helps.

Archer6,

thanks for your reply. Is there a shortlist, with respect to the basis 'power' parameters (in terms of minimal requirements) that would fit a decent T60P?? Where can i find this /ask this.

I'm also from the Netherlands, and I'm also planning on buying the T60p, but the retail prices in the Netherlads are ridiculous, I am a student, but I am not familiar with any students discounts, do you have any more info on this?

So I was thinking getting it from abroad. Would you please let us know how your experiences go with ordering the laptop outside the Netherlands? I'm really curious how everything (shipping, payments etc.) will go.

Buy from Germany

I am a Dutch mational too, who has just bought two t60's in Germany with teacher discount (discount goes for pupils, students, etc) from www.notebooksandmore.net.
They sell English windows and keyboard versions too.
Another one is www.lapstars.de

Cannot discuss prices (against the rules) but they are freely published on their sites.

Hey that's cool info man ! thnx !

What were your experiences with getting it from Germany? Did you went there yourself? or did they ship it to you? How did payments go? (safety etc).

And what will happen if you need to use that warranty? Do you need to ship it back to Germany?
Also, did you have the 30days no questions asked return policy?

You get the European return rules: 14 days

Notebooksandmore will send the two laptops (they have been sent today) by post to my homeaddress for Euro 69. They do a screentest (pxel-fehlertest) for free, so that you receive a screen without dead or stuck pixels). They also add memory or a drive without charging labour costs. I am not the owner of or connected to this company  , the feedback on the net is very positive.

Here are excerpts from a post of other users regarding purchasing in the US and then having it shipped to you.

John, I've placed an order with www.euclidcomputers.com, following archer6's advice.

Unfortunately, I couldn't go through Bill this time.

I ordered the 2007-63U for US$2245 + US$145.49 shipping (FedEx).

Fingers crossed that these guys are as good as they say they are...

Well, I waited a couple of days before writing so that I had time to fully check it out, but my T60 arrived on Monday. The order->delivery process went something like this:

Ordered: 20 Apr
Estimated: 5 May (to Euclid)
Delayed to: 25 May (to Euclid)
Arrived: 14 May (Euclid) subsequently FedEx'd to Australia (Internationational Priority)
Arrived Mascot, Sydney: 17 May (evening)
Cleared Customs and duties paid: 19 May
I picked it up: 22 May (from Canberra FedEx Depot)

You know what the best part was? I emailed Euclid asking them to open the box when it arrived and do a basic check that it was not DOA, as it would be very difficult for me to send back from Australia. They did not advise me that this check had been done, they just sent it to me. When I received it, sure enough, the box had been opened. They even included a printout which said:
Euclid wrote:
Tested OK per customer request :
1. Entered Windows and checked all keyboard keys;
2. Audio CD checked in optical drive;
3. 802.11b wireless connection tested.

How's THAT for customer service? Very Happy

How much did it cost?
Laptop purchase price: US$2245
FedEx shipping: US$145.49
Total base cost: AU$3256.80 (0.734 x-rate)

Customs Charges / Tax:
Declared value: US$2245 / Exchange rate (0.7713) = AU$2910.67
- T & I = AU$85.91 (I don't know what this is)
- GST = (Dec value + T&I) * 0.1 = (2910.67 + 85.91) * 0.1 = AU$299.65
- Import Dec N10 Air Charge: $40.20
- AQIS Entry charges air: $14.00
Total payable = AU$353.85
To pay this, FedEx will call you (from the states, interestingly enough) and you can pay it by giving your credit card # over the phone.

All in all, I couldn't fault the customer service from Euclid. They responded to all my questions promptly and honestly. There were some delays in Lenovo delivering the laptop which were to do with external forces (as mentioned in the shipping thread). And when the status changes to "Shipped" on the Euclid status page, it means that Euclid has shipped it, not Lenovo.

Tell me what you want to use the computer for? And the type of application software you use. Then I can provide some thoughts and feeback.
