Unknown device appears to be modem, but modem is installed

Every time I restart the laptop, I get the Windows "Found New Hardware" msg. But Windows cannot find the driver for the device. In Device Mgr, there is one unknown device, and when I look at Details for that device, I see the following:
Device Instance ID: Root\Modem\0000
Of course, this makes me think that the modem is the issue. But the Thinkpad modem is already installed - in fact, I can go into the modem diagnostics and query the modem. I also have a Standard Modem installed, but this is so I can use my Blackberry as a tethered modem, and this too is operational and can be queried just fine. Besides, this error began before I installed the Standard Modem.
I suppose I could just try reinstalling the Thinkpad modem drivers, but figured I would check the forum users first. Any thoughts?

Try removing the ThinkPad modem in Device Manager and reboot. The next time windows boots up it will prompt you for adding the device, install the modem again. That should take care of it.
PS: I haven't tried this on a THINKPAD modem, but it has worked for other modems in the past.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck. Still shows unknown device.

Did you remove both the Unknown device and Modem before restarting?

Uninstalled the modem, rebooted, installed modem driver. Didn't try uninstalling the unknown device; I guess you think that might make a difference?

It could be the Verizon Wireless WAN adapter. Its not installed by windows.. and thats what my "unknown device" was.

Good thought, but I don't have WWAN on my T60.

why not post a screen shot of your device manager to compare with another users similar or like machine?

Tried uninstalling the unknown device after taking steps described above. Rebooted and unknown device is gone! Hamid, you were right, thanks!
