Hitachi 0A25016 as main HD & Ultrabay HD in T60p

Can anyone confirm using the Hitachi 100 GB SATA drive (Hitachi Model # HTS721010G9SA00, Hitachi Part # 0A25016) in the T60p? I don’t want to pay Lenovo’s price for the drive so I plan to order it from a 3rd party vendor but I want to be sure I get the right model number.

The Lenovo parts list, at least what I have seen, doesn’t give a number that matches Hitachi’s so I’m trying to be careful about this. I would like to know if this drive will work both in the main HD bay as a replacement for the drive in the T60p and in the Ultrabay SATA adapter as a second drive. I’ll be using this to clone to, if everything works out right and hopefully will be able to report back on that when it happens.

I would really appreciate feedback from anyone who has tried this drive in either or both locations, ideally cloning to it then booting and running off it in the main drive slot. Also, if someone who has the 100GB drive installed by Lenovo in their T60p could tell me what Hitachi Model # AND Part # it shows what would be great.

Summing up, I need to know:
1.) Does the 100GB (Hitachi Model # HTS721010G9SA00, Hitachi Part # 0A25016) work as a replacement in the main HD bay?
2.) Does the same drive work in the Ultrabay?
3.) Can someone tell me the Hitachi Model # and Part # on the 100GB drive shipping with the T60p?
4.) Any experience cloning to this particular drive and replacing the drive that came in the T60p with this one?

I have a HTS541010G9SA00 and a HTS721010G9SA00 running in my t60p.

Both are swapable into the dedicated disk drive bay or the ultrabay. I have run into an issue on setting Ultra DMA mode 2 when the HTS641010G9SA00 was in the dedicated bay - but I think this was a driver issue. The HTS821010G9SA00 is the factory unit and runs in Ultra DMA mode 5 (which is Ultra ATA-6).

Thanks for the reply. Just a little clarification. You mentioned the HTS721010G9SA00 and the HTS541010G9SA00 (which appears to be the Travelstar 5400) then two other drives, (the HTS6410... and the HTS8210...). Was that just a slip of the numbers? I can't find either of those on Hitachi's list. Is the HTS6410 you had trouble with the UDMA mode actually the HTS5410 and the HTS8210 you said was the factory unit actually the HTS721010G9SA00?

I have the original HTS721010G9SA00 and one I bought at costcentral.com. Both work fine in either bay. Before you think spending bucks, think about using the IDE drive in the ultrabay. With the old T4x adapter it works perfectly. I use my old IDE Seagate momentus 7200rpm drive as well in the ultrabay.

Thanks for the confirmation on the drive. I guess with 2 users not having any problems it's safe to go with it. I'm planning on ordering 2, one for cloning and the other for additional storage.

Going with an IDE drive would be a little more economical, but I don't have the IDE ultrabay. Paying extra for it kind of cancels out the savings on the drive. Thanks for the tip though. If I did go that route I heard the IDE ultrabay bezel didn't match up on the T60p. Any problems getting it to fit or anything else?

Have you had any experience cloning? I like Acronis True Image and have used that with no problems for a couple of years on my desktop. From what I've seen a number of Thinkpad users have had good luck with it.

obviously if you want to clone or have a backup, the SATA drive makes more sense, its kind of hard to push in the PATA into the SATA bay

The old ultrabay case fits quite well into the T60p, just the outside frame does not fit perfectly, but thats not really an issue. Only the new SATA ultrabay case does not fit into the T4x, because there is a pin coming out of the case.

I have good experience with the powerquest drive image 7.0. I use this since 2 years already and never had any issues with cloning my system partition.

Thanks for the clarification on the ultrabay. I suspect you're right about the PATA in the SATA bay. Might be a little tough getting all those extra pins to fit.

I know it's getting a little beyond the original subject but, have you had any experience partitioning your HD? There isn't much in the forum on that and I'd like to hear from somebody who has done it.

Hi Dennis,

well I try to keep it simple. So with the 100Gig, I use a 60 Gig system partition. The remaining 40Gig of the HD deliver much less performance, so I keep data there that I do not use too frequently (e.g. Picture or Videos). On my ultrabay harddrive I do the same. The first 60Gig for max performance goes for my Vmwares. The remaining 40Gig again for Data.

For backups I have a neat 100Gig 2.5 usb harddrive, where I just image the 60Gig of my system partition. Remaining 40 Gig is used for normal backups.

Thanks for the input on the partitioning. You have been very helpful. I'm new to Thinkpads and still expecting my first to arrive, hopefully in a few more days (T60p). I'm trying to gather information now as when I get it I have to so some quick modifications then hit the road with it. That's why I'm asking all the questions now.

If it's not too much, let me ask you a few more things. The Thinkpad must have some kind of protected partition where the restore data is kept. How do you deal with that in partitioning? I have used Partition Magic for most of my partitioning. Do you recommend anything else? What kind of USB hard drive enclosure are you using? I have used the Apricorn 2.5 enclosure so far with an IDE notebook and it works great.

Do you do your cloning to the USB device or the ultrabay? If you use one but not the other, any reason why? Sorry about all the curiosity, but, as you know, one small misstep in this process and it can take a while to get the mess cleaned up.

Actually a PATA ultrabay slim device carrier works fine in the t60p. Another use pointed this out and I tried it. The only bad part is that 12.5mm height drives are too tall. Only 9.5mm drives will fit. The controller is a mixed SATA / PATA controller and will accomodate both types of drives. Just don't try to put a SATA drive in a PATA hdd carrier - it won't fit.

I use Norton Ghost myself - but heard good things about trueImage. You can ghost the IBM partition as well. However, you might not want to resize it.
