Short beeps after restart or reboot XP

#1 Post by robertsun » Wed May 31, 2006 10:46 pm

I have received my new T60p 2623-DDU two weeks ago and install extra 1 Gb RAM(JetRam from Transcend) for it. For some reasons, if I upgrade or sometime need to restart Windows XP, the T60p display nothing and beep sound (beep, three beep, three beep, and beep). I need to press power button at least five seconds and press power button again to restart T60p. Everytime I update system files, drivers or install new software that required to restart XP, and the beep sound error happen. I search from web, and it indicates this error is related to system board or DIMM.

I have run memory test at bootup, PC Doctors under XP and see no error. Does anyone have the same issue before or any suggestion? I have upgraded Bios into 1.05 but not help much. Is it possible RAM compatible problem?

Probably yes. Try memory test of the PC Doctor under PCDOS from predesk top. But it may pass. Then try back the RAM coming with your T60.

I have exactly same beeps on exactly same model. And my 1GB extra memory came from IBM and was installed by IBM. If I shutdown my laptop and then start it (kind of simulating restart) everything works fine. MemTest and PC doctors both run memory tests fine, no issues. All other tests in PC doctor are fine as well...

Sure I can and probably will call support sometime later. But I don't really want to send laptop in and spend time cleaning it (from my documents etc.) before sending and then waiting again to receive it back from them. So for now I will live with shuting it down and then starting.

I have updated Bios to 1.06, and changed different 1G ram either from IBM or JetRam, but not help at all. So, I am sure that it is not memory problem.

Does anyone have any suggestion? I really don't want to call tech support for this issue.

Just wanted to share. Beeping is gone for me (well at lest for now)... Since the very first day I was not able to access disk manager (that's the way how it came from Lenovo), I was always getting RPC not available error. So I decided to create recovery disks and restore hard drive to factory settings. It solved my problem not being able to access disk manager and restart beeps disapeared as well. So my guess is that XP installation was somehow f$%$ed up by Lenovo, and that was causing some hardware not being properly accessed by drivers or something similar.

I hate hearing this. Mainly because I have not noticed anything wrong with my machine yet and I am wondering if there is something lurking in there ready to jump out and piss me off weeks/months from now...

Call tech support and need to replace system board

#8 Post by robertsun » Fri Jun 09, 2006 8:22 am

Call tech support after try out all different way to work around. The only way to fix this error is to replace system board for my T60p. As IBM tech support said, it might be the security chip on system board cause this beep sound error.

So I decide send back to IBM for replace system board and it will take around 3 to 4 days as tech support told me.

I had send my T60p 2623-DDU back to IBM to be fixed. According reply back to IBM, it is the memory problem. They said a lot of MT dimms have compatible problem, and they suggest to use Samsung RAM for it.

Don't know why, but why IBM use MT dimms for their RAM. Anyway, waiting for my T60p back and see what's going on.

I don't know about the rest of you but there are some threads active on this forum that scare me, since they all seem to be pointing a finger at memory interface/timing being marginal on this platform. I hope my delayed T60 will have these issues fixed, but I'm not too optimistic

Finally, I got my T60p back from IBM. The only thing they did, replaced original Micron RAM with Samsung RAM to fix this problem. The short beep sound on reboot or restart is gone. I also add the extra 1G Transcend JetRAM to it and run without any error.

According IBM Tech supports, there are many problems related to Micron RAM with T60. So, if you have similar issue like this, check your memory first. Most of IBM's RAM are Micron's memory product.

I strongly doubt there is a problem with the memory management on the board or with the T60 itself. Thus far it appears that the Micron RAM seems to be causing the problem(s).

Same problem just started here.

Have 2 x 1Gb Samsung DIMMs

Removed & reseated same memory chips and problem has gone away (for now), so could simply be badly seated RAM

I don't know if it would be of much help, but the memory compatibility lists are on their site:
