How do you protect a certain folder with the fingerprint?


Hi, I'm a new member and just got my thinkpad yesterday.

I have been trying to do the folder protection and I read the user guide in lenovo.com. They say go to access IBM but I don't have that, I have thinkvantage instead. So I don't know what to do..

Folder Guard is the great software to do this. (thought they need to add encryption features soon).

Is there a reason to pay more for stuff that barely has encryption when part of the reason for getting the T60 in first place was that you could encrypt files with a finger swipe?

I don't have the latest version of CSS (Client Security Software), but the readme should contain all the information you need. ThinkVantage is the same as Access IBM for all intensive purposes right now. What used to be the "Access IBM" button on the Thinkpads have changed to ThinkVantage.

Check out the "PrivateDisk" function in the thinkvantage utilities. You may not be able to selectively encrypt any folder you like, but you could just move all the files you want encrypted to this folder.

You used to be able to simply right click and encrypt a file or folder with the older vesion of CSS; the newer ones require the creation of a "PrivateDisk." Similar to what TrueCrypt does.

Can I encrypt and decrypt folders using my fingerprint?
Yes, this can be done with the assistance of the Client Security Software. The security policy for file encryption/decryption must be set to fingerprint authentication. See the Client Security Software Administrator and User Guide on the next page for further details.

To configure and use fingerprint authentication to encrypt and decrypt files:

1. Install the Client Security Software.
2. In the Microsoft Windows control panel, open Embedded Security Subsystem.
3. Enter your administrator password.
4. Click Configure Application Support and Policies.
5. Click Application Policy.
6. Click Edit Policy.
7. Enter your administrator password.
8. Click Action, then select File and Folder Protection from the pop-list that is now available.
9. Click the Authentication Elements tab.
10. In the Fingerprint Selection section, check Required.
11. In the Passphrase Selection section, uncheck the Required box. The Fingerprint Reuse pop-list can now be used to set a specific fingerprint reuse policy. Review the available options and choose which one best meets your needs.
12. Click Ok.
13. In the pop-up dialogue box, click Browse, then locate and select your private key (private1.key) file.
14. Click Open.
15. Click OK.
16. Click Close.
17. Click OK.
18. Click Exit.
19. Right-click a file or folder. An option to "Encrypt this file" will display when any non-encrypted file is selected. A "Decrypt this file" option will be displayed in its place when selecting an encrypted file. You be prompted to supply your fingerprint when encrypting and decrypting files and folders, within the requirement chosen in the Fingerprint Reuse pop-list box.


Now my question is... how come I can't find this Embedded Security Subsystem in my control panel???

Is there another way to access this control function? I have CSS 7 (the latest one) and a T60.

I don't find this on my T43 with the latest 6.x version of CSS. Sounds neat, but with detailed instructions that don't seem to apply to my installation, it's a non-feature.
