T60p LCD cover loose

#1 Post by ibmthink » Mon Jun 05, 2006 1:32 pm

I finally got my T60p yesterday.

I noticed whenever i close the lcd screen, it does not close properly.
It seems loose.

Does any one else face the same issue or is it like that.

It is perfectly normal to have some looseness. This is to prevent binding and chafing of the case. However it would be difficult for me to quantify this and how much is normal.

Based on my years of using ThinkPads and deploying many of them over the years in my company I would suggest that yours is probably just fine. It is also normal for the latch tabs on the lid to be "loose". So unless you have a severe problem I would just watch it over time and if it gets unbearable than use the warranty service.

I have never seen a latch break or a display cover fail. Which is not to suggest that it cannot happen, just that it's quite unlikely.

Hope this helps.... :D

Thanks for replying. I am bit relieved now.

I guess what you said makes sense.

yeah, all 3 thinkpads I have around at home have a somewhat loose latch when shut. Not really an issue as I've seen worse on HPs, Acers and Dells. The only other notebook which I've seen to close firmly without any jiggle was my old Fujitsu E7010.

My 14.1" has about 1.5mm play on the left side and pretty much none on the right side.

What I am afraid of, though, is breaking the little latches -- esp. the right one, as I open the lid with my right hand and find my thumb nearly always resting on it. I have been trying my best to always open from the middle of the lid...

I find the lid fit on my T60p to be consistent with that on all of my prior ThinkPads. The only one I ever had an issue with was the lid on my T43p which was somewhat warped and wouldn't latch without the application of (what I and my local onsite repair tech considered to be) excessive force. IBM replaced the lid assembly and that was that.

It's interesting to me that my T60p is the first machine that I invested in a screen protector for and its seems to be the only one that the keys come nowhere near the screen even though it latches down firmly with little or no play. Oh well, an ounce of prevention...
