Just got my 2623D7U a few days ago. The backlight leakage is actually much worse in person. For example, when browsing the forum and the threads are listed with background colors, it is very difficult to differentiate between the colors and the bottom third of the screen looks completely washed out. I have tried all the display adjustments and it's basically a contrast issue which I have never known to be adjustable on LCDs.

In order to use the notebook I have to tilt the screen at about 110 - 120 degrees and adjust it many times. If it matters...I have the dark (bottom) corners as well.

A display this washed out can't be acceptable with all the rave reviews the T60 gets...can it?

Do you guys think I should just get an exchange? There are no dead pixels, the palm rest doesn't squeak and the battery doesn't jiggle. I hope I'd be as lucky (aside from the backlight) on the next one.

P.S. - I've owned several laptops and none looked this bad, including my Pentium-75 Gateway clunker.

I don't have a T60, but I agree, that display just does not look right. My T42 certainly doesn't look like that.

That seems a little excessive for light leakage. Mine is definitely not that bad. You have the 30 days to return it for whatever reason. If you can stand to go without a notebook until they ship out a new one you can always go that route. After 30 days though, I don't know what their warranty policy is. I know they have something like a 8 or more dead pixel policy for returns, but I don't know how they handle light leakage like that.

I concur... My T60 14.1" doesn't look like that. I have a Samsung SXGA+ display.

send it back or send it in for repair..
the former might take a longer time than the latter..

If I do send it in for repair, I've read here that I should send the notebook in completely bare. What should I remove before sending it off to IBM?

I would remove the hard drive, cd-rom drive, and the battery. That is of course, unless you want them to reformat your drive to factory condition. However, from reading several threads on this site, some members have had bad experiences sending their hard drives in.

incognito - can you tell me the machine type and serial number of your unit? I'm wondering which LCD your machine shipped with. My T60 has a TMD panel which has the exact same light leakage. I'm actually considering selling this and ordering another T60 to hopefully get a Hydis panel.

No need for the serial, I checked it out this morning...TMD.

I guess when I send it out for service I'll request a Hydis/Samsung replacement. I'm still not sure which is better.

they won't give you a replacement since they will claim it's "within specifications." I wouldn't bother even calling them or going through any kind of hassles. I've had terrible experiences with Solectron (whom Lenovo uses for repairs).

I just placed an order for a new T60 at costcentral.com. The 2623-D6U is $1429 shipped, and Lenovo is offering a $200 rebate, so my final cost will be $1229. there's no guarantee that I will get a Hydis, but it seemed worth a shot at that price.

let us know what you decide to do.

one advice: forget about the form.factor of a 14", the display is about as bad as it gets, while the 15" has an lcd panel that is about as good as it gets

I received my new T60 2623-D6U from California Computer Center and sure enough it has a Hydis, and what an improvement!! I can't begin to tell you the difference - whiter, brighter, crisper, no more graininess, no more pinkish tones on white pages, etc.

I also got a Chicony on this new T60 and surprisingly enough I prefer it slightly to the NMB. my typing speeds feel slightly faster on the Chicony, even though it might feel a bit 'cheaper.' the mouse buttons are also quieter on the chicony which I like.

I kinda start to like the Hydis display too. After I resolved the graininess issue, which was caused by a BIOS update.

I had a 5 bad think pad fiasco culminating in the previously posted skipping dvd issiue on 2623d6u. Had a good display, sent it back for the dvd issue then found out about the fix. Too late, the replacement had a cheesy display, argued with them till I got them to send me another one. Why should I get one with a great display, same model, then a crummy one. This is bad inconsistancy for Lenovo. New one has the better screen. Too bad nobody else makes a real trackpoint, otherwise Lenovo would have alot of competition. Sony 15.4 svreen is awesome for example. Think pad is top dollar with marginal display quality in comparison to competition.
