atheros (IBM 11a/b/g) vs. Intel (a/b/g)

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Sat Jun 10, 2006 1:30 am

my T60p (and my X60s) both came with the intel wifi card..
signal strength = 40% to 60%..

my T42p had the atheros wifi card and gave 90% to 100% signal strength in the same place..
T43p with intel wifi card was better, like about 60% to 80% and occasionally 95%..

so i picked up two of the appropriate wifi cards for the T60p (and X60s) and swapped the cards..

now i get 100% signal strength..

Thanks for sharing, Bill.

I have to admit I haven't noticed any difference in strength between the Intel 3945 and, for example, my desktops with wireless (when in the same location). I will stick with it for the moment until it causes me grief...

I noticed the same with my T60p with intel card vs T41p's with atheros cards.

I have been considering the Atheros myself after reading reviews about it on here. Where is the best place to get one?

i got the pair from an ebay merchant..
two for about $99 including UPS delivery..
go get'em.. :)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

lenovo wants $49 each + shipping and sales tax..
and i don't think they have any at the moment..

i SHOULD have made a deal for a dozen at $35 each and sold'em here..

but i'm too busy defending against the singapore attacker..

is anyone seeing faster download speeds with the Atheros cards, or only higher signal strength?

If the higher number correlates with better throughput (which I don't take as a given), I will be making the upgrade very soon.

If you only use your computer in high signal strength areas, don't bother upgrading. Both cards are capable of throughput much higher than typical broadband connections (cable modems or DSL). So your throughput will be constrained by your broadband connection, not by your WiFi link.

But if you use your computer in hotels and meeting rooms, where signal strength can be less than optimal, then the improved sensitivity probably makes a big difference in the ability to sustain a connection.

thanks redburgundy.

I have a comcast cable modem paired with a DI-524 D-Link. I did a comparison with my T42 and T43 (T43 has IBM, T42 has Intel) and got these results:

winzip
t43 w/ Atheros II: 3.88mb in 20 sec
t42 w/ Intel 2915: 3.88mb in 25 sec

webroot
t43 w/ Atheros II: 6.56mb in 33 sec
t42 w/ Intel 2915 : 6.56mb in 36 sec

firefox 1.0.7
t43 w/ Atheros II: 4.65mb in 24 sec
t42 w/ Intel 2915: 4.56mb in 25 sec

adaware 1.06
t43 w/ Atheros II: 2.72mb in 25 sec
t42 w/ Intel 2915: 2.72mb in 26 sec

Which laptop has which card?

Your speed listing contradicts what you wrote as to which machine has which card.

I use an external antena and a Orinoco Pcmcia Gold Wireless card

I boost my sensitivity.

sorry if I'm cross-posting. I was having trouble viewing another thread containing this post so I'll ask the question here:

Does the Atheros driver require any services running in the background?

Intel's driver installs at least three services (EveEng.exe, Dot1XCfg.exe, S24EvMon.exe) that consume 21,928 K of memory on my system.

Yep, it's only a "B" (10 meg) card but nothing gets a signal like an Orinoco Gold. It's still faster than most internet connections.
I have a couple stashed around here for those low signal strength areas. 8)

I don't know how to determine what processes are associated with my Atheros card, but I have EvtEng.exe running (1,308K memory usage) and S24EvMon.exe running (812K memory usage) but I don't have Dot1XCfg.exe running.

What do we do with the Intel cards after we replace with Atheros cards. Is the format common enough to find Ebay buyers?

just go to Amazon.com and search on 41N3008. on the right side, click "sell yours here."

I've sold hundreds of items on Amazon and found it to be far easier and safer than eBay.
