How do you get rid of the beep sound when you close your laptop and when you open it.. i.e. when it goes into standby and when it comes back out?

Have a look in the ThinkVantage Power Manager settings.

Start => Control Panel => Power Options => Beeps/Alarms (tab) => Power control beep.
