Wondering if anyone else has experienced the following:

The happens when I'm typing a URL into my web browser, or text into MS Word. It's rare, but occurs just enough to be annoying.

Instead of the text appearing instantly on the screen the moment I type it, the screen will "hang" for a second or two before spilling out all the typed text at once. It's almost like all my keystrokes are going into a buffer, which occasionally hesitates in sending the information to the display.

My first thought was that it had something to do with Active Protection, and that any jarring of the hard drive would cause everything to pause for a second. But after trying a couple of experiments, I don't think this is the case.

Any ideas?

I do notice this too...

Me too, but it happened on my desktop. Probably Windows related, not Thinkpad.

I am not sure what is causing your problem, but it's probably a service. You might check ATI Hotkey Poller service (or any other poller for that manner). Try disabling that and see if it makes a difference. I saw in other threads that the ATI Hotkey Poller was causing DVD video's to stutter some.

If your antivirus program is doing a scan or update, that might account for it.

You can launch Windows Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and click on the processes tab. This window will stay on top. Now do your typing and see if you can see which process is consuming a large amount of CPU resources when your typing hesitates.

I've got ATI hotkey Poller disabled already, and my antivirus only scans when I tell it to.

I'll try keeping Task Manager open, but I suspect it'll be like a watched pot never boiling-- the issue will never arise again!

Here's a possibility, actually-- I have Windows Update turned on. With Windows Genuine Advantage phoning home daily, and who knows what else being sent back and forth from Bellevue, I wouldn't be surprised if it holds up Windows from time to time.

The solution that worked for that exact problem in my case was to:

1) Disable ATI & all pollers
2) Change MS Update from auto to on demand.
3) Upgrade to 3GB ram... oops, just kidding on this one

Now all is well.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, then double-click on the ATI Hotkey Poller service, Stop the service and Disable it. You can always go back and undo the changes later if you want to.
