I hear a very irregular but constant noise from my computer which corresponds to the activity of the hard drive, according to the led indicator. What can I do to reduce this? This is incredibly annoying, especially when i am not accessing my hard drive much and would like for it to be quiet. BTW, i have a 14.1 sxga screen, 1.83 processor, 80 gb 5400 drive and 1 gig ram (from IBM).

I've got a fujitsu drive in my t60 and it's louder than hell. If you have a hitachi drive, I believe there is some acoustic utility you can install to try and tweak it to be quieter. Other than that you're kinda stuck with it.

There is a Hitachi Drive tool you can use to tweak the settings of your drive; in addition, NHC has the ability to set spin-down and slient operation modes for the HDD not available through the standard Windows power manager. Using NHC and/or the Hitachi Drive Tool will take alot of noise out of that HDD when it spins. :)
