Caution: Soft Finish on T60 15"

I was carrying my T60 from one room to the other, (with the cover closed) and just brushed the door of the room I was entering and it scraped the paint off the corner of the display cover. The door was smooth, not rough or textured. I was being careful, got distracted turned around and "BARELY" bumped it... Upon further scrutiny, I noticed the finish wearing away from the far right corner and "I know" that was not bumped or scraped. So that is merely from being inserted in and removed from the case.

I report this so that others will be aware. After many, many T series ThinkPads, I have not had one with a finish this soft. Not one of my other machines has this kind of damage. This is very dissapointing.

Oh well... it is what it is.... :? It's at times like this that I regret being such a bloody perfectionist (sic).

I wouldn't worry about this too much. The soft finish eventually wears off on the corners, but the material itself won't develop holes unless you scrape it off with a metal instrument.

Yes I did notice that since it's CFRP, at least it doesn't show very much and the "average person would hardly notice"....

Thanks for your response.

Yup, same here; the finish wears off a little at the points where it gets stressed and sheared the most, namely the corners.

Keep those cards and letters coming folks... I'm feeling better already. :D :D :D

I still stand by my position... ThinkPads are the finest! I am truly enjoying the new 60 series.

Thanks christopher

Archer,

If it makes you feel any better, I got these large silver corners peeking through the black coating on the corners of my T42. I like to think of them as the "tattoos" beneath my Thinkpad's Armani suit.

You really made me laugh with your comments here. A terrific analogy!
Thanks rockefella, for the humor...

I'm thinking this soft finish is only on the newer Thinkpads. I don't see this problem on my T30.

Happened to my T41p and a lot of the other T4x series that I've seen around campus.

Just wear those "battle" scars with pride!

It will happen, sooner or much later, if it is handled enough; regardless of the precautions taken...

Dude, I almost had coffee coming out of my nose when I read this.

Taking into account that the average ThinkPad owner isn't really all that average, it's perfectly understandable that one might be fairly particular about his machine. This kind of silly case damage is all to be expected, but not yet, not this easily, and not to you. This is supposed to happen to somebody else. Obviously, these things can and do happen, but I can definitely relate to how you're feeling. Anyway, here's my contribution ...

[flowery cover here]

Dear Archer,

Thinking of you and your ThinkPad during this difficult time.

Warmly,
The Chief Family
