How does USB driver inventory work gentleman?

Scenario: I use the same USB port to use multiple devices. Is there a driver or system device inventory that gets configured to the system to remember the history of devices that are being used? I ask because of the following:

I had an old 128mb thumb drive and now use a SanDisk 4gb drive. When I insert the new thumb drive it points me to the old drive letter [R] and displays a storage capacity of 128mb. I unmounted the drive letter and can't seem to view the new thumb drive regardless which one of the three USB port I insert it in.

Device manager displays the following in Universal Serial Bus Controllers:
> 5 entries of "intel(r)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller -27C8"
27C9,27CA,27CB,27CC

> 5 entries of USB Root Hub

Any ideas?

I finally figured it out just in case someone else runs into something similar. The thumb drive was assigned a letter that overlapped a previously assigned drive mapping letter. I opened disk management and reassigned the drive letter to a variable that was not in use. I called Sandisk tech support to no avail. I also called Lenovo and they immediately said 4 gb thumb drives are not compatible with t60p. Hogwash! In any event that is my spill. I finally have my 4gb removable storage viewable.
