Software Installs Hang

#1 Post by jflegere » Fri Jun 23, 2006 5:21 pm

This is posted in Windows forum too:

Apologies for the long post, but...

I'm on my second T60p, 2623-DDU (the first one was exchanged after tech support was unable to solve the problem) and I'm still experiencing a strange problem when installing software.

On a new system, out of the box, I usually:
  • Update the BIOS (1.04 to 1.06 on the first system, second system came with 1.06)
Update the system drivers and system software
    Update Windows
    Install software
After doing this several times on the first system (each time re-imaging back to factory state) and once on the second system, I have had software installs just stop halfway through. This has happened with Office 2003 (CD), QuickBooks 2006 (CD), Diskeeper (download), and MS Small Business Accounting 2006 (CD).

Tech support has had me try removing 1 of the 2 memory modules. They have shipped me different modules so that I have 2 from the same manufacturer (Samsung in my case). They have shipped me R&R CDs thinking that my factory image could be bad. All no help.

I know that there is an issue with Windows Installer 3.1 v1 silently hanging (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803) so I've tried installing 3.1 v2 as a first step but still had the same problem.

I've seen some posts here regarding entire machines hanging with BIOS version 1.06 and I'm considering "downgrading" to 1.04 and trying again.

I can't believe that others haven't seen this. I thought that the "out of the box" procedure described above would be what most people do too. I also can't believe that this is the second system that I've had this problem with. It sounds like a software problem to me but I don't know which updates not to do.

Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Jay

Your first machine did exactly the same thing this one is doing now?

Maybe one of your programs (diskeeper maybe) is causing some problems.

For the most part, the problem happens early on, the first or second program installed. For example, after all the updating, Office 2003 was the first program that I tried to install and it failed.
