And there is a small scratch on the display:

Is there any possible way to remove this scratch, or will I have to send it back for another?

Send it back, and polish that might help fixup the scratch will also make that spot shiney and take off the matte finish. Not to mention that your screen warranty is now basically void for any future claims because of physical damage to it. If you don't swap it out now, you will be screwed later on. Just ask for a new model... don't do a warranty service on it this soon.

I have a a soft cotton cloth. Is it possible that the scratch would be removed with water applied to the cloth gently and then wiping it?

Could it be one of those LCD keyboard markings?

If not, I will send it back.

From the pictures its hard to tell if its a scratch or just dirty. I would clean it first. Just normal cleaning with a soft cloth and LCD cleaner or mixture of water and alcohol.

Just like Teresa said, that might just be dirt. Did your Thinkpad come with a protective transparent plastic over the screen? A T42 that I got last year did. Maybe what you have is adhesive residue from that?

What I would do is use a soft cotton (or microfiber) cloth slightly damp and see if you can gently rub it off. If you can't, exercise your 30 day return by all means. Good luck.

Last place I saw use those sheets was Toshiba on 2 models a few years ago. All the IBM's I have played with out of the box didn't have it.

Marks from the keyboard tend to be more centered on the display.

If that mark doesn't wipe partially away with the tip of a clean finger, it probably won't come off using cleaners. If you do use anything

ONLY USE ISOPROPHYL ALCOHOL (50-70%)

Windex, glass cleaner, etc will ruin the display for good.

Thanks guys! Most of the mark is my fingerprint accidntally touching it at first. The actual mark is barely noticeable in real life and It does not bother me. It is much smaller than it appears to be. I will try using a shimmy cloth with water and then if that does not work i will use the iso. alcohol recommended in the T60 service and support manual.

Either way, I'm fine.

Actually, I might have not explained well. This protective plastic sheet that I am talking about was a rigid piece of plastic, taped with regular adhesive tape to the border of the screen. I suppose it was to protect the screen from getting marks from the keyboard or from the pointer.

And you're right about the Windex, never use that on a screen unless you want to get rid of the matte coating and have it look like one of those Sony Ultrabrite laptops

I think we are both talking about the same thing. They are somewhat floppy, and are used during assembly to prevent damage to the screen from various assembly tools and whatnot.

OK. Yes, that's the type. I was surprised to see it in my new T42 as I took it out of the box, but everything was fine apparently, and it seemed to protect the screen really good. I actually kept it along for protective purposes until I got a ShaggyMac protector, strange as it sounds.

I got it off just dirt I suppose.

Here's what I have good success with. Take a terrycloth washcloth and wet one corner with warm (or hot if needed) water. Then just simply hold it (motionless) on the area for a few moments, then using a medium to light pressure wipe the entire screen and then dry it. I find that this will lift any smudge, fingerprint, etc and leave the display nice and clean without using any chemicals.

A while back I noticed a strange looking mole on my shoulder that I had never seen before. It looked just like the "skin cancer" posters I saw in high school health class. My wife looked at it, and we agreed that I should get right in to see a skin doctor.

Later that day I was sitting in the Dr.'s office, shirt off, when he came in and I told him about the scary-looking "sudden mole" on my shoulder. He looked at it, grabbed a towel, and scrubbed it off. It was just dirt.

I was embarrased beyond words. he said "That should do it" and walked out. Obviosly, I will never see him again.
