Deep Smart Power Down problems?

#1 Post by jiveturkey » Thu Jun 29, 2006 7:37 am

I've got a few T60's (2007-56u) that have the latest BIOS (1.07). Whenever I unplug the network cable and the A/C power, the laptop will lock up. Even when I plug in the network cable and the A/C power, it refuses to respond, and I have to hard boot the laptop.

I've found that if I disable the Deep Smart Power Down feature from within the NIC, I don't have this problem. I've downloaded and installed the latest power management drivers/software, and the latest NIC drivers, but to no avail.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone is able to give.
thanks!

BIOS 1.07 is causing major video problems on other systems, so perhaps changing to 1.04 would fix the issue? I know the new NIC drivers are BIOS-dependent but you should be able to downgrade those as well.

just beware that 1.04 has trouble getting the lcd to turn on when resuming from standby. there is some discussion of that bug toward the end of this thread:

Same issue here with 2007-56U

We were also experiencing the same problem at our company with 2007-56U. I updated our base image about 2 months ago when our IBM sales rep sent us a loaner T60. We received our first T60 batch (8 machines, I think) and had no problems. They were running BIOS 1.05a. The serial numbers of all of these were L3-F####.

So, we received our next T60 shipment a couple weeks ago, and all of them are having the same problem as described in this thread (hard lock-ups if running on battery power and the ethernet cable was unplugged, resuming from standby). These new T60's were using the same base image, so I didn't think it was a software problem. In fact, I could pull the hard drive out of one of these malfunctioning laptops, put it into one of the functioning ones, and it worked fine, thus indicating a problem with the hardware. These new laptops had serial numbers L3-K#### and L3-M####. They were also using BIOS 1.05a.

To make a long story short, (and using the helpful tips posted on this forum) the problem was finally resolved by downgrading to BIOS 1.04 on the problematic T60's. BIOS 1.06 and 1.07 had the same problem. Why does the original shipment have no issues with BIOS 1.05a? That's what I don't understand. I've asked the question to IBM EasyServ repair/support (who seemed unaware of this issue) and will post an answer if I get one.

After all my experience with these bios stuff, it seems that 1.04 is the best out of all versions. The newer BIOS versions seems not be tested properly.
