15 GB Missing on IBM_PRELOAD

#1 Post by dfumento » Mon Jul 17, 2006 9:16 pm

I have a 60GB HD, 5 GB for the service partition. 51 GB for IBM_PRELOAD (C Drive) but I'm only using 25 GB for everthing including paging file and hibernate disk space. Do you know where the 15 GB that is missing is and how I can recover it?

If you right click on your C: -> Properties, what does it say for Used/Free/Capacity?

What do you mean, missing space? If you have a 60GB HDD, a 5GB service partition, and a 51GB C drive, then you are only missing 4GB. This is normal on NTFS partitions, as they use alot for formatting.

I agree. alot of the space is used for formatting. just like a floppy. a floppy is 2megs but 1.44 formatted. you lose a little

I used a tool that tells which folders my disk is being used and it only shows 25 GB usage for everything including paging file and hibernate disk space. 5GB is used for the service partition. Leaving me about 51 GB maximum space for IBM_PRELOAD (C Drive). I forgot to say that it says I only have 10 GB free when I should have 25 GB free. Since I'm only using 25 GB out of 51 GB, I am missing 15 GB.

Does anyone know how to recover the 15 GB that is missing?
TIA

There are a couple of things in my experience that can account for "missing" space. One is the System Restore folder. It is normally hidden and can get very large. It probably defaulted to a maximum of 6Gb. The other thing that has happened to me (some years back) was a retail Norton Utility product that created its own recycle bin so it could recover lost files. That recycle bin was hidden (accessible within the Norton Utility properties). I don't use it any more and don't even know if it is still available. ... JD Hurst

Well, it turns out there were backups that I wasn't even aware were done: a base backup of 18 GB and two incrementals.
Thanks for the help.

Where does it hide those?

There is a folder called RRbackups on the C drive.

At any rate, I found out about it by using the backups program on the ThinkVantage button and it lists the backups and their sizes and there is an option for deleting the backups.
