Brand new T60, windows running sluggish

Hi everyone,
I just got my brand new T60 last week with a gig of ram.
I had a little problem I was hoping someone could help with. THe boot up and shut down times on this laptop are fine, nice and zippy. Running programs, installing programs are all fine as well.
The only problem I am having is when navigating within windows. For example when I am on my desktop and double click my computer......it is taking way longer than it should to open. Same thing with control panel. Clicking on any type of folder is taking like 30 seconds to open.
I have defragmented my drive but that didnt help much. What else can I do?

This was happening to me when I recieved my T60. Of all the praise I give IBM / Lenovo they still put a lot of software on there that, even being dual core and 1 GB of RAM, bogs down the machine.
I tried uninstalling Google Desktop, and all the Norton stuff, but it still ran slow.
I ended up using my own windows disc to wipe the whole windows partition and re-install. I downloaded the drivers I needed from the Lenovo support page.
It was not fun, but neccesary.

i was going to do that but the windows disc i have doesnt have service pack 2 and I read that it could cause the hard drive to not be recognized or something.
does anyone have sort of a list of everything i can safely uninstall or remove from my startup (msconfig file)?

You can safely turn off everything. I have done it.

cool.
as of right now I restored the pc all the way back to the default IBM config. Then I just installed what I needed, uninstalled the norton and the laptop is flying again.
I have no idea what was causing it to act up, i installed the same stuff the first time as I did this time (mcafee, office etc)

There is nothing particular that IBM supplies that slows down your laptop, and nothing from Microsoft for that matter. I just go through all my applications and check all the settings. I also make sure I have nothing from Google installed (all apps nowadays want to install Google toolbars and the like). I turn off instant messaging and turn off automatic updating of some lesser applications. Make sure your IE cache is small - large cache takes time and is the default. My T41 is nowhere near as fast as your T60 and the T41 is plenty zippy. ... JD Hurst

Guys I apologize, I think i know why i was having this slowdown.
First of all I noticed that the computer was fast until I added it to the domain. After that it starting taking forever to open any windows folders and the cause for that was because I was going through a cheapie 5 port hub in the office.
I dont know the exact reason why but I know that as soon as I disconnected my network connection, the laptop started flying again.
thanks for your help. and I'll see you around the boards.

Yes - I will add this to my list of "try this"s.

Yeah,
I have noticed that computers connected to domains tend to be sluggish when connected and occasionally slow even when not. I've since found work-arounds to connecting to such networks without joining a domain.

This problem is very frustrating.
It is definitely related to my work domain somehow. When I take the pc off the domain, its flying. But when I add the t60 to the domain, its taking forever to open control panel and my computer and internet explorer.
to make it even more confusing, when using firefox while connected to the domain, its still flying. The folders are just taking 20-30 seconds to pop up.

Have you discussed this with youre local IT administrator at work?
It sounds strange that the pc slows down when it is connected to the domain since you are working locally on the pc?
I could understand if it was network folders you are trying to open.
Things that could slow you down are roaming profiles and redirecting of "my documents".

Think it relates to the network crawling feature of Windows XP. You should try either to diable it completely using XP-Antispy [

or to just specificly disable the "Search for Network Folders and Printers".
Both solutions have been tested and can be recommended.
