Do I need a wireless network adapter for my T60?

#1 Post by Queen Mary » Sat Jul 22, 2006 7:38 pm

Hello,

I just bought a wireless router today(Netgear WGT624 - I know, I heard it is an awful router >_<). Anyways, I set everything up and the router is running fine, but heres the thing:

I checked on my T60 and it detected the wireless connection(which was known under my surname). I connected to it, but currently I cannot go on Internet Explorer or anything and the connection itself keeps going on and off on my laptop, but is still working fine on my main computer. It says "aquiring network address", saying that I am connected with the full 5 green bars up, and then i lose the connection, which it keeps doing it in a circle(from "aquiring" to lost).

Is there something wrong with my router or do I just need an actual adapter for my T60? I thought the T60 had wireless coverage? I am probably just misinterpreting this and I feel like a complete fool, but your help would be so appreciated!

Thanks!

T60 has wireless adapter built-in to it. I beleive the problem is something else. Turn off the other computer and try to connect to the router just only from T60. I heard that the netgear router has problems when there are multiple computers around.

Ok, thanks a lot! I also have another question: I restarted my T60 ebfore I read your rpely and it asked me to set up a network connection using a USB devide or manually. I tried with the USB but I dont know where the "wireless access point" is. Is this feature necessary or jsut for security reasons?

Open the network connections folder and right click on the wireless adapter icon, it sould say Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG, select "view available wireless netorks" and see if the card will find your acces point. You should not be using any USB connections unless you have inserted a USB wireless adapter into your t60. I have had issues with my wireless card not connecting to some networks well, even being what would normally be considered close range.

Are you using Access Connections?

I did that and it shows the network available and that I am connected, but it says "aquiring network address". I'm going to turn off my desktp soon and see what happens.

If you let it try to connect for a while does it? Do you get a yellow bang, :!: . When it stops trying to acquire the IP address do an ipconfig /all. Check what IP address you get, if it is in the 169. range your getting it from windows, this will do you no good. Do an ipconfig /all from a computer that can connect to the router and see what IP range you get.

I had this issue on both intel 3945 abg / Atheros 5006ex adapter and it only happens while connecting to my ASUS wl-530g AP.
I fiexed it by disabling "Wireless Zero Configuration" service and set it in Fn+F5 instead.
I believe somebody mentioned it some time ago.

How exactly do you set it to FN+F5?

Ok, so I enabled Access Connections and put in my security type and settings. It detects the network, but I cannot connect as authorization failed. Do I need to disable the windows wireless config as well for this to work or is there some other problem?

If you're using AccessConnections, you've got to disable the Windows wireless config.

I am still tinkering with the wireless and network settings on my new T60 myself and don't fully understand the little IBM wireless access program yet.

Did you check your firewall settings yet? Are you using the Symantec stuff that it came with? The later kept me from setting up the access to another PC though the internet access through a wireless router worked. Windows firewall on?

Argh, I have no idea what to do. It is still showing the same problem. Again, It says "aquiring network address", saying that I am connected with the full 5 green bars up, and then i lose the connection, which it keeps doing it in a circle(from "aquiring" to lost).

I have tried turning of Micro Config (see above) while turning off AC, then vice versa.

When using AC, it recognizes the network, but it wont let me connect! Something about not being configured right! Even thoguh I put in the proper security settings with the 63 digit code and all.

I tried disabling my microsoft firewall on my T60, and it allows me to turn it off, but everytime i bring the control panel back up, it seems to have automatically turned itself on again!

If I dont get it solved today Im going to return it and look at a Linksys.

Try turn off your desktop and reboot your router. I had kind of same issue with my D-Link Wireless G Router, I have 4 PC running same time and same place, 1 desktop with D-Link USB Wireless adapter--which is always on; One sony laptop with Intel built-in B/G wireless PCI card; One dell laptop with intel B/G wireless PCI card---wireless disabled, connect to router via cable ; One Thinkpad with Intel A/B/G wireless PCI card. sometimes, Sony laptop will lost IP --- same issue as you. If i reboot the router, I can always fix this issue.

There is another solution, you can manually set your wireless network IP on your thinkpad.
