Different chassis for 15" T60s? Keyboard issue.

#1 Post by coolsilicon » Fri Jul 28, 2006 6:11 am

My new 2007-F4 has arrived and so far I'm impressed by the build quality, except for one thing. The keybord has a fair amount of flex in the left part. It starts at the "D" and and from there upwards and to the left it will flex and make a rattling noise while I'm typing (I'm not hammering on it). The right side is nothing but perfect: nice sound, good travel, stiff and responsive.

Secondly, I have a problem with the palmrest. I wanted to check whether the keyboard might have been installed incorrectly, so I took off both, the palmrest and the keyboard. Was very easy, reinstalling everything didn't need much force. I've read abut the procedure here on the forum and I watched the online videos from IBM/Lenovo. Also, I'm not new to such tasks, I have disassembled a notebook entirely in order to exchange the mb. Anyway, the palmrest fits perfectly and all the screws go in without trouble, it's just that the left corner refuses to go back into position. I've tried everything I could think of, it's just a plain no-go.

I searched the forum regarding the keyboard issue and this is what I found:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... light=flex

So could it be that this specifc model has a different chassis or are these just two lemons?

By no means this is a "with Lenovo quality went down" rant, I just want to make sure this keyboard issue is the exception and if it can be fixed.

To put it simple, you could just answer these questions:

1. Does your keyboard (on a 15" model) flex?

2. Does it rattle?

3. Do all keys make (almost) the same sound?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Edit:
the reason why I ask whether there are possibly different chassis, is because I have no idea what else would cause that I don't read complaints regarding flexing keyboards on the T60, but just the one I mentioned and me, where both affected machines are 2007-F4.

1. No
2. No
3. Yes

When replacing the palm rest, try flexing the palm rest so that it bulges up in the center. Following the FRU replacement instructions...
Push at the sides of the palm rest so it bends upwards in the middle a little, and lift it away from the computer a little.

ramian,
seems it becomes increasingly clear, that there must be something wrong with either the keyboard or the chassis.

I've tried to reseat the palmrest following the instruction, still no luck. It seems to fit/sit perfectly except for that f%&#/ng corner. Anyway, thanks for your feedback.
