...do I really have in my ThinkPad? In the device manager it shows up as Matshita DVD Ram UJ-842.
Can I use double-layer DVDs or not? And if so which kind?

Do you have any reason to doubt the veracity of the Device Manager?
The Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-842 is dual-layer.

No, I am sure the device manager is not lying to me

I just found conflicting information about that drive regarding its dual layer capapilities. And I am still not sure which dual layer DVDs I can use. Are there any differences? Brand recommendatiosn?

Well, I would search the T4X Forum and the T6X Forum when it comes to the brands. Overall, though, I would stick with the higher quality media for dual layer burning. You can get a stack of DVD Rs on the cheap only to get really frustrated when you run into problems burning and reading them.

In the two 2623-D6Us I have, one DVD burner is a Mastushita (39T2677), the other is a LG/Hitachi (39T2679). The Hitachi works better but it would be a hassle to get the other one swapped out, if that's even possible.
