Help with T60p boot error please

My T60p has started giving an error on bootup. Sorry I don't have the exact error handy but its an error with the Intel boot agent. Says the lan configuration extended rom is corrupt or not initialized. It gives two very loud beeps and makes me press <ESC> to continue. I am not trying to boot from the lan so not sure why I would get the error unless its just a standard thinkpad diagnostic on every boot. Once I press escape it continues startup and boots into windows.

I just recently used the wired nic (previously only using the wireless) but I don't know if related. I also recently uninstalled AVG and installed Avast antivirus software instead. Those are the only two things I can think of that I have done recently.

A call to EZServ didn't really help. They are going to send a box but the support guy didn't really seem to have a clue on this one.

The wired nic works ok in windows though it doesn't show up in device manager until I plug in a lan cable.

Latest bios and embedded controller installed. I also tried initializing bios to defaults but didn't help.

Anyone else seen a startup error like this?

Can you disable the LAN boot agent via the bios? I personally haven't checked.

I can disable the extended lan ROM in the bios and that stops the error message. But I guess that means there is something wrong with the onboard nic.

I had the same deal where the wired nic would disappear unless the cable was plugged into it, i knew this was not normal so i reinstalled back to factory and have not had that problem again. my conclusion was after dowloading all the windows up dates i noticed the icon missing in the connections folder and would only reappear after being plugged into an active port.
