hello to all.
i have inserted a sata harddisk on the ultrabay using a hardrive adaptor for the T60. THe drive is detected by the T60, however it does not show on window explorer nor in disk manager.
Is there a way of getting the harddisk to show in window explorer without rebooting the system.
thanks in advance

If the harddisk isn't found then try to open the device manager and do and right click then chose scan for hardware changes.

Same here, I thinking of getting an HD adaptor. I thought the Ultrabay devices are hot swapable?

did you partition the drive and format it ?
the drive obviously does not show up at all in windows if it`s not partitioned

They are - I hot swap loads of drives and have not had such a problem - it might suggest a problem with the adapter - check on the startup sequence in the BIOS to see if the second drive is picked up there.

This is what "fixed it" for me. Now all is well and I can now swap it without hesitation. Has been rock solid, stable and quiet.

apologies for the late response to all, i just signed in, thanks for all the replies.
i have a found a way(accidentally) around my problem. i think it has something to do with the hardisk on the ultrabay having a hd password. anyway i left my pc yesterday to attend a meeting with the hd on the ultrabay plugged-in but not showing in explorer. When i returned, the t60p has slept so i had to wake it up and swipe my finger to login. when i opened windows explorer, the ultrabay hd is now showing in as drive D:. Now in order to access the hd in the ultrabay after a hotplug, i just put my pc to sleep (Fn-F4) and wake it up by Fn.
i think the bios wouldnt allow me to access the hd on the ultrabay after a hotplug because the hd password is preventing it as i did not boot up with the ultrabay hd plugged in.
Thanks again for for the responses, hopefully this will benefit others too.

It's odd that these expensive unibay drives don't work as smooth as garden variety USB drives that we can hot plug and play all day long without error.
As for my unibay drive, it's not hot swappable... at least not most of the time. I have to go to My Compter, right click, Manage, and then activate the unibay drive...

Hi,
I've got a question about the ultrabay adapter. Is it possible to use other harddisks in it then the standard hdd's from IBM/lenovo?
Because I still have a 40gb 5400rpm sata hdd over here. I can buy the ultrabay adapter and just plug it in and use it?
Thanks!

i am using Seagate SATA 80GB 5400rpm HD on my ultrabay hd sata adapter.
what is the brand of your hd? if its seagate, then it should work.

Yeah - because the BIOS has to authenticate a hdd with a password, it only supports warm swap so you will need to plug it in while in suspend.

This is a Windows OS issue.
At a "run" prompt, type compmgmt.msc
Go to Storge > Disk Management
Right-click the HD with no drive letter, right-click and Format/Assign a drive letter.

Its not an OS issue and USB drives don't perform better - if you have no password set on the drive then it will hot swap but if you have a hard drive password then the BIOS needs to authenticate it - this is a security feature.
