Freshly received T60p.

Upon closing the laptop screen, when the screen is tilted down to approximately 20 degree to the keyboard, there is a small but definite resistance feeling apparently arising from the left hinge area. Upon gently pushing (ie gentle force) the screen toward full closing, there is a cracking noise and then the laptop screen closes apparently normally. This does not happens at every closing, but seems to appear after extended (1-2 hrs or more) use in the open position. It definitely does not feel normal and happened right from the beginning.

Any suggestions what to do to solve the problem.[/img]

Do you close your lid slowly? Because that happens to me when I do that. The hinges are brand new... that's my hypothesis. It needs some time for them to "break-in".

Closing in "normal" or "slower-than-normal" speed. I do work with a numer of other high end gadgets (pro-cameras, micrposcopes, etc.), so it just does not feel right to have this obstacle upon closing which creates a click when gently forced to close.

It is a few days old laptop, and I am loading the programs on it.

Yes, it did. But if I close it super slow, it'll happen again. It feels as if when closing slowly, there's a peice of the hinge that is moving with another piece, so that when the lid comes to the bottom of the computer and that piece cannot move any furthur, it snaps the "carried" piece back.

This isn't probably true, but just a hypothesis, because it gets tougher to close the lid when I move more and more to a closed position when I'm closing it slowly.

I am within the 30 dys return period.

Should I return it or not. I do have the 4 yrs extended protection against everything but still...?

This is perfectly normal, as ThinkPads have "stiff" hinges purposely to keep the open display from "wiggling". If you simply close it at a normal speed you will find that they will outlast the life of the computer. Ignore the noises as those will go away as the hinge pivots and corresponding surfaces wear in. Also be sure to close it with your fingers on the center of the lid, not on the edges or corners. We have deployed hundreds of ThinkPads in my organization and never experienced a hinge problem.
