IEEE 1394 Camcorder Help

You're my only hope.

For whatever reason my T60 has decided to stop recognizing my Panasonic GS-29 camcorder.

I was using an IEEE 1394 card. I've tried multiple cards with multiple cables.

The computer detects the firewire card, But is unable to to detect the video. The device manager says the everything is running fine. I've tried uninstalling multiple times, and then reinstalling using the "detect new hardware" option.

I've found many posts of people on google groups having similar problems with firewire connections. But no one seems to have a solution. Any ideas?

My thesis lies in the balance.

does you dv camera appears in the device manager after connecting to your card. if so, try uninstalling the driver and let install by itself.

and your dv cam is set to video, yes? not camera.

I am looking to use my T60 for some basic video editing as well and just bought a Adaptec firewire PCMCIA card. I am waiting for a connector cable right now so I have not tried it yet.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time I read about problems with the firewire connections to a T60 and I am curious as to how my Canon DV camera will behave together with the Adaptec/T60.

Did you try the camera on other computers lately? Did you check the cable? The firewire card in another computer? You get the idea...

ok, I can only give you the experience with the T40p and a panasonic camera, and I think there is no way you will get this to work. Your symptoms are exactly the same as with my T40p. I tried different cards different cables and different software. Nothing. I even got to the stage where the camera was recognized, but then all the different editing softwares crashed.
I then plugged the same stuff into the pcmcia of a dell, and in one second all worked perfectly.
According to some posts of video editing forums, it is a known problem of panasonic cameras, but panasonic never fixes the issue.
Now dont ask me why it works on other computers. I just want to prervent you to try the impossible.

It would be interesting if you try the same with a non panasonic camera.

The dv cam is indeed set to video and not camera.

The camera is not appearing in the device manager. Unfortunately I know the conncetion is possible because this problem started once the original firewire card was stolen. I had no problems with connectivity using the original firewire card and the camcorder.

Any other ideas?

...and then you replaced the card with a different type? As I said, I heard people had trouble with certain firewire cards in the T60 obviously. It seems to be especially picky with cards that sport a combination of firewire and USB ports. Maybe you can get the same kind again that you had before it was stolen?

This probably does not help you right now, but I just plugged in my Adaptec AFW-1430A plus a Canon Elura 70. Works without problems. Plug and play.

I had problems using my Sony videocame with my t60p. It would crash the thinkpad everytime i tried to import video. Then IBM updated the video drivers (again) for the thinkpad, and things have been fine. Make sure you are using hte latest video drivers for your thinkpad.
