T60 & Motorola Q Phone

Anyone with a Motorola Q using blue tooth to sync with your T60 / T60p?

Yeah....I've had the Q for ~1 week and everything is working great. I've synced via usb, bluetooth, and IR....I've actually found that I prefer IR since it is less key pushes on the Q and the T60 (I don't normally leave bluetooth on) to get IR to sync in ActiveSync.

The Moto Q looks sweet indeed. I am currently using the Moto E815 and it synchs very well with my T60 Outlook data via Bluetooth.

With the Q, which looks a lot like a PDA with its keyboard, besides your Outlook contacts and calendar, can you view other documents? Such .Xls and .doc ?

The Moto Q might just be what I am looking for to replace my E815...

I've had the Q for about 6 weeks now... I use the USB cable to synch, which is the least hassle. Works very well with Outlook 2003. Also synchs well off line via Exchange Server 2003, almost like a CrackBerry.

Only problem is battery life/charger. The phone would regularly discharge completely plugged in and do other crazy stuff like that. Took it to Verizon... they told me I was stupid to charge it overnight... supposedly it needs to be disconnected immediately after a full charge. BS. Even the manual says it's a smart battery and you can't overcharge it. Anyway, I got the slighly larger battery, about $22 with tax, and have not had any issues since. Yes, it makes the Q a little bigger, but it's still only about half the thickness of the Treo 650, which I replaced with the Q.

what about the email service? I own a blackberry and was checking the Q out when it's being sold over at Amazon.com for 99 dollars. My understanding is it doesnt push emai, but instead uses pull. I need to get my messages right away, not wait 10-15 minutes for it to connect to a mail server and download messages.

Anyone know more about this?

You are correct that it doesnt naturally push email, but i just have mine check email every 15 or 30 min automatically. If you need more than that, you might choose the crackberry, as some of the other options for the Q are alittle too much to bother with. The Q also turns itselff off daily for no reason, which is quite annoying. Check the forum for it. qusers.com

I just had instant success with connecting my SonyEricsson W800i with T-Mobile service. I have an older plan that comes with what T-Mobile calls "t-zones" that comes with unlimited usage for only 2.99 a month. It can be easily connected as a modem, both via cable or bluetooth even though T-Mobile blocks port 80. With the appropriate proxy settings on port 8080 it works though. It's not as fast as a dedicated wireless internet plan like Evdo or other UMTS like services, but fast enough to check a few things on the web and do your emails on the road - pretty much worldwide by the way. Not bad for 2.99/mnth.

With Motorola phones are a little more tricky since they are still trying to sell you kinds of seperate software for it. However, there are quite a few dedicated web pages that deal with Motorola phones, their software and firmware issues and how to tweak things. I have a V188 that I tweaked with a number of things that I found there.

I am not familiar with Verizon's services or any other non-GSM/GPRS service for that matter, but I would not be surprised if there is a way of tapping into their version of internet access as well.

I would start looking at places like www.motoqwiki.com or Qusers.com.

I am not sure what type of Verizon plan you'll need for this, but here are hacks for using the Q as a "dial up" modem:

Nobody seems to comment on a great feature of the Q. If DOES automatically push email through a hotmail account. All you need to do is forward your email to hotmail and it is automatically pushed to the Q. Just activate mobile hotmail and messenger. Messenger needs to be running to trigger push email.

Sweet, much better than Verizon's sync every 15 min solution.

It all depends on how you set it up. If you're using an Exchange Server equipped with Exchange Active Sync (the most recent version has this), it can be made to look like push e-mail. Basically, ActiveSync on your Q is set up to sync directly with your Exchange server (e-mail, contacts, tasks, and calendar). ActiveSync over Exchange isn't a continuous process like it is when you are connected via USB/BT/IR to your computer. Instead, when you get a new e-mail, an invisible text message is sent to your phone (Verizon provides for this with a 2000 SMS/month free allowance) that basically tells the phone to run Active Sync, which causes it to receive the new e-mail. In roughly three weeks use with the Q, this seems just as reliable as my old Blackberry--sometimes e-mails hit the Q before my desktop and sometimes the other way around--but I look MUCH cooler and I'm only carrying one device. Plus, I never did like the phone or organizer functions on the 'berry. And I hated Cingular.

I have scheduled it so it runs timed Active Syncs at 15 minute intervals on weekends and when I'm asleep, since I don't need instantaneous alerts then. I also sync to my Thinkpad via USB or BT (depending on whether I need to charge or not). All in all, it works like a charm.

I'd expect a release of the Microsoft Security Features Pack on the horizon, and that will make it true push.

I feel the call quality is great. The only way you'll know its a smartphone when you're talking is that Q is a bit squarer than i'm used to. I wanted to keep the Q's small and slim size so I didn't want a case...but I did want something to protect against scratches. So, I thought about the invisible shield (basically LCD protector material but for the entire phone body) but the invisi shield was ~20-25 bucks....I heard about the one from bestskinsever.com for 6 bucks--i read good reviews.

I sync it everynight with Outlook via IR on my laptop. Check it out....you always have 14 days to return it if you don't like it!
