Fingerprint reader and website access

I can't seem to find any option that would allow me to use my fingerprint scanner in place of online passwords for websites. I thought it was possible, but I have searched this forum and come up empty, as well as ThinkVantage. Sorry for the n00b question.

You can do it with the ThinkVantage Password Manager component of the Client Security Solution (CSS).
It worked well with CSS6 but with the latest version, CSS7, I find it to be a bit finicky with Firefox and IE on some websites. CSS7 doesn't like a few websites and hence will not save fingerprints against their passwords; with the majority of others it is fine.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to get it to work however, it is the most confusing thing I have encountered lately. I have been reading the help file but can't seem to get it right..

It does not work with firefox. IE only. If that helps at all.

Nick Y said (earlier in this thread) it works with Firefox and IE, although there are some problems with some web sites (= they're site-specific, not browser-specific). Which of the two statements should we believe?

hmmm, I use Avant, and I can not get it to work. I will try IE.

Me - Ha ha. I think atleast. I have not come across a site YET that allows me to hover over the field I want password manager to input into, but that it is only in Firefox. If I go to the same website in IE 6, it works like a charm.
Also, IE 7 will not work with the fingerprint reader.

You will find that I have posted elsewhere comments about CSS7 and Firefox in discussions with others, so believe which you will -although I understand the concern with two opposite answers. (May be worth searching for CSS7 in 'thinkpads.com Support Community Forum Index -> Windows OS')
With Firefox the PM works in a different way to CSS6. To get the fingerprint into PM, you have to enter the password into the relevant webpage and press return/ enter. A box will then appear asking you if you wish to save this with PM: YES, NO or NEVER. (The Firefox password Manager will then appear too, and ask you if you want to save the password! I suggest that you say YES to one and NEVER to the other, otherwise you will get in a bit of a muddle...)
If you press yes, next time (probably after you have logged on again) you go to the web page, it will bring up the fingerprint icon for you to swipe.
BTW, Firefox, fingerprint and PM works with this site, if that helps.
Good luck,
Nick
Edit: Don't bother with the Type and Transfer Tool; probably wrong, but I don't think that I have read of anyone able to use that now!

Nick Y,
I am so confused. Let me try and understand. When I go to a webpage and I want Client Security Password Manager to create a new entry I follow these steps:
1. Fn + F2
2. I select "Yes" to the question of creating a new entry
3. I type in what goes in a field, and then drag the red crosshairs to the field it goes in, until every field is completed, and then I click Save New entry
However in firefox when I go to drag the crosshairs it will not let me highlight the field.

I really hope there is an update for the utility sooner or later. IE6 is awful, and Firefox is quite popular.

You are using the Type and Transfer Tool. That does not work, so do not even bother about it. (So don't bother with Fn+F2 etc.)
Go to the webpage needing a password. (Try forum.thinkpads.com, once you have logged out of it.) Enter the password into the webpage itself and press the enter key.
A CSS/Password Manager dialog box will come up, asking you if you want to save the password (this is not the Firefox dialog -that may come later; as said previously, I would, in this case, go for NEVER in the Firefox dialog.)
Select YES.
Next time you come to that webpage, although it may have to be after a restart, as your previous log-in may be remembered, the fingerprint icon will come up. Swipe finger and password(s) will be entered into webpage boxes. Press return (unless you have set PM to dothat automatically) and you are into the 'protected area of the particular website.)
Hope this helps. I think that CSS7 is one hell of a confused mess, so not surprised that you are confused.

I have never seen a CSS/Password manager box come up. That would seem to be the logical way of doing things though. I have had mixed success with the Type and Transfer tool in Firefox, although it has generally been more trouble than it's worth, so what could be a very useful tool goes largely unused.

The PM dialog box is as follows: (not too easy to embed a picture here...)
Size: About 6cm wide by 2 cm high
Dialog header: ThinkVantage Password Manager
Text: Would you like to save this Web site with Password Manager?
Buttons: Yes, No, Never
BTW, you have to have the password manager running in your system tray, I assume. (Icon is a red filled circle enclosing a lock and key.)

Nope, never seen a box like that. It is running and in the system tray.
-Ah - is that option only in CSS v7? I guess I'm still running v6.

CSS6 is different, but I forget how -except that you can use the Type and Transfer Tool.
My description, above, is all to do with CSS7.

Is it possible to just use your fingerprint to access the specific site? Right now i use the password manager and the only time i have it set to show a fingerprint is once per boot. The problem with secure mode is that i have to enter a fingerprint and a password to use the manager, basically defeating the purpose of the manager. Is there any way to use just a fingerprint? CSS 7 is terrible and im quite lost at the moment.

randomocity: I am set to 'More Convenient' mode, I think it is called, rather than secure. Hence I use a fingerprint to log in, then I only need a fingerprint if I go to a webpage where a password is required. E.g. my on-line telephone bill. The system tray PM icon is present all the time and I do not need a fingerprint to enable it.
There was a time when I had to use my fingerprint several times. I think that was when I had the earlier version of CSS7 and I had set it to the standard Windows log in.
If you go to All Programs/ ThinkVantage/ Client Security Solution. The top left hand menu title is Advanced. Select Manage Security Policies, from the menu. You can then adjust the log in settings, which may help. The main window also has 'Use Fingerprint Software' which has a settings, which again may help.
Sorry I cannot be more specific, but perhaps others will come along with better solutions.

I used CSS (7) for a while, but it was very slow to login (waiting for security chip....). I had to disable it because of this.
Unlock for example went from 10-20s down to <1s
Anyone else see this?
i am using it

hello,
i am no computer guru but i am using the fingerprint reader, i hope i will be able to help.
first you should go to a site where the user name and password should be entered.
then before entering anything you should right-click on the icon of the client security password manager which appears in the tray just next to the volume and time and wireless and....(down to the left) it is red and have a picture in whit in it looking like a lock.
then choose create
there you can create the username and password.
you type the username in the field and then move the field to where it should be entered in the web page
you do the same afterwrds with the password
afterwards save
then whenever you enter the site: press ctrl+f2 and you will be asked to enter your fingerprint.(you may change this shortcut if you want)
you can change the settings by right clicking on the client security password manager and choosing manage.
i hope i have been helpfull and that is what you need.
if you have any questions please tell me.
hope to hear it worked with you soon.

zhenya,
Is it possible that you didn't install the Firefox extension to support the password manager? The instructions say to install that first so I did and haven't had a problem yet -- it behaves just as Nick Y describes.

Jazzar: Can I just clarify a couple of points:
then choose create
When you say 'create' do you mean 'Type-And-Transfer-Tool...'
(I forget what CSS6 offers, but with CSS7 you have a choice of
Open Password Manager...
Preferences...
Type-And-Transfer-Tool...
Exit.)
you type the username in the field and then move the field to where it should be entered in the web page
you do the same afterwrds with the password
Am I correct in assuming that you are using Internet Explorer version 6 or 7?

hi Nick.
first i am using the 6 version of css.
and i am using internet explorer 6 too.
i do not know about the 7 version but in mine i have the following options when i right click on the client security password manager icon(in the lower right of the screen, next to where the clock is...):
-recall
-create
-manage
-password manager settings
-help
-exit
i then choose create, at least for the first time when i am to set the fingerprint instead of the username and password. so i think this could be the same "type and transfer you mentioned"
i type the user name in the field then i drag it with the cursor next to it to the username field in the website, i do the same to the password. then i save the entry.
when i am to enter the website again, i either choose recall from the menue described earlier, or use the shortcuts key(currently set to ctrl+f2 in my system) and i log on automatically, you can set it up to ask for the fingerprint then or not to.
hope this will clarify, if you want anything more, tell me.

Jazzar:
CSS6 (Client Security Solution) works well; the problems described here are to do with CSS7 and especially, although not limited to, Firefox.
There are some significant differences between CSS6 and CSS7; not least that parts of CSS7 (e.g. the Type_And_Transfer_Tool, which was 'create' in version 6) do not work.
If I were you, I would stick with CSS6. A few users here, myself included, have found it impossible to return to CSS6 once CSS7 has been installed.

Darren,
Where does one find that Firefox extension?
Thanks, Dominique

On my machine, it's in "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution" and is called tvtpwm_moz_xpi.xpi .
The instructions for installing it can be found
here.

Thanks for the super-fast response! It was in the same location on my machine. Hadn't realized I had such a thing. Now I just have to figure out the correct procedure to log in onto web sites (like forum.thinkpads.com)... It's non exactly intuitive if you ask me.
Cheers, Dominique

I just did that (with forum.thinkpads.com), but I don't get the fingerprint thingie the next time, just the normal login screen in Firefox. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, Dominique

My CSS show as part of the R&R installation. I can't see what version it is that I'm running.
My Password Manager will only store password, no username field is ever saved and if i manually enter the username then execute the shortcut key, finger swipe, etc. it never transfers the password to the appropriate field.
Why is CSS tied to R&R as an installation package? Is this the norm? I can't update it without going through the R&R install which I've been avoiding as I don't use it.

Not being very helpful, but I am not sure. I think that CSS7 seems to give different results for different people/ laptops. PM, in CSS7, does not like some websites, but, for me anyway, does like Thinkpads.com.
Does Thinkpads.com show up in PM 'Password Manager Entries'?
Under the menu Set Preferences/ Advanced, is Mozzilla ticked? (I have all of the first 4 in the list ticked:
Enable Password Manager;
Internet Explorer;
Mozilla;
Windows Applications;
Also I have Default Policies of
Windows Apps: Convenient;
Website Entries: Secure;
Scratch Pads: Convenient;
Autofill: By domain
Other: Enable hot keys.)
Don't know if this will help you; I hope so.

First- the version: Go to All Programs/ ThinkVantage/ Client Security Solution. The start up screen shows the version, or go to About, under the help menu when the CSS window comes up. (Mine is 7.00.0022.00)
Second -username: I think your problem may be around the settings. In the window above, go to first menu: Advanced/ Manage Security Policies. At a guess you ar eset to 'more secure' and have something set requiring you to enter the password each time.
Hope this helps.
