I received my T60p yesterday, overall build quality is pretty good. But I notice one thing: I can not open the lid by one hand. I support all Thinkpad laptops can open using one hand, so there is only one latch on it, and I can open my old T40 without any problem. For the new t60p, I can open the latch by one hand, and open the screen lid a little bit, I have to hold the keyboard by the other hand to full open it.

My T40 is a 14' screen, and has one big and one small hinges, my T60p is a 15' screen, has 2 big hinges. Do I get a tight hinges, or it is commen for 15' screen?

For people who has 15' T60, can you open your lid by one hand?

You have to break it in. Mine was like that when I got it, extremely stiff, but its better now. I can open it with one hand.

After 2 months I still have to use two hands.

The hinges are pretty stiff to start with, it is the same way with the T4X Series and my T43. It took around 3 months for me to even feel a little loosening up; I could open in with one hand from the start, but I usually use both hands. I tried a T60 and it felt about the same when it came to hinge tightness as my T43.

Is it just that you can't open it with one hand without the base pivoting and lifting the front off the surface it is on or does the base actually stay down and the lid just provides to much resistance to open comfortably?

mine is pretty stiff, I need two hands. Although I can get it to open with one hand, if I pull a bit on the lid, while moving it fast, but this could also be related to my sticky desk

My 14" t60 has wider and stronger hinges than my 15" t42, it seems to speak to the further design improvements for strength and longevity.

Ive had mine since the beginning of the summer, but to be honest, it has been very very heavily used since then, so its not representative.

Here look at what i have concluded with all my 4 thinkpads.

T30- open with 1 hand
R52- Open with 1 hand
X60- Open with both hands
T60- Open with both hands

(T60 is a 15" LCD)!

The hinge is very tight and i have been using it daily but the hinge still remains tight. I tried to open and close my T60 repeatedly but to no success. The hinge is still very tight.

Personally, I like the fact that it takes two hands to open. I've had some that were just too loose and if you barely touched it, it would move off the sweet spot while opened.

I think this is a sign of how well put together they are. Note that everyone who has a T60 needs 2 hands to open so the tolerances for manufacturing must be pretty precise and uniform.

I have used my lecturer's Toshiba Satellite and the hinge is so loose that you just need 1 finger to open the LCD and when you move the notebook slightly to the right or left, the stupid LCD will slam shut on it's own. Just see how loose this hinge is. So, i "kaypoh" (hokkien translation: Busybody) go and use a screwdriver and screw that hinge very tight but the hinge is still loose.

I don't understand why? Is the hinge hole too big or is it something inside had worn off.

Now, after i read the post above this post (sorry, i never see the username of that member above me), I will learn to use both hands to open my TPs. Actually, opening a notebook with 2 hands looked more professional than opening it with 1 hand and worse still if you need to struggle to open it.

14" t60 and it's just now losening up enough that I can almost make it all the way open with one hand. Just give it some time.

Is a tighter hinge design something to complain about? I always laugh when I see floppy laptop screens that practically flap in the breeze. FWIW, I can open my T60p with one hand, but then again I've got big hands.

When i use my brothers T42 i use 2 hands

on the first day, i needed 2 hands to open my t60. however i accidently knocked one of the cornersat the hinge then it became looser, now i can open with one hand

Sorry for the minor thread resurrection, but I can open it with one hand, its peculiar how much the hinges loosened up after hardly a week of use

I still can't open a old Thinkpad A22e with one single hand

I have used my T60p for more than 2 months, still I need 2 hands to open it.

Guess mine came with funky hinges then. Bless the 3 year warranty.

I'm not in the same league with you guys....T60's and all, but I've been wondering about this hinge thing for a long time. I have 2 T20's,
a T22 and 2 A20m's. Both A20m's look like they've been used very little, but I can see the plastic flexing around the speakers on both when opening the lid.. When I had them apart for motherboard replacement, I had to be careful about opening the lid when replacing the hinge cover. One T20 is my favorite because the hinges feel perfect (but it has been used so much,the keys and spacebar are all "shiny"). The other T20 and the T22 are still too tight, in my opinion. I always open them slowly, because I have heard of crack problems around the ultrabay.
So, basically I think the hinges are a little too tight at build time. While I had all of mine apart, I used very lightweight oil (one drop) on the friction part of the hinge, but it didn't help. I think they are so tight, the oil couldn't penetrate. But I did have a Dell C6XX one time that had so much play in the hinges I got rid of it. That one didn't have loose hinges, it had play in them.

Tighter hinge are always better than loose hinge.

Imagine your thinkpad with a very loose hinge always slams shut when there is a strong breeze.
