I don't get why Lenovo needed to release System update instade of making Software installer work better ??

System update seem to find updates that Software installer can't find and clockwise.

there was another thread on this a couple weeks ago. basically, the cut-off date for updates that can be located/downloaded by Software Installer is mid-july, when System Update officially debuted. I suppose SU might have been written to not find any updates older than a certain date as well. What i would do is use SI, then go to the driver updates page and manually download/install anything updated after mid-july.

I just checked for updates and got two from Software Update (the Rescue and Recovery update and hotkey manager) and one from Software Installer (Power Manager.). Extremely inconsistent.

Software Installer is going away

There's more info here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OFT-UPDATE

Basically it says "Software installer is being replaced by System Update 2.0. Software installer is still available at this time to allow you to transition to System Update 2.0."

I just downloaded what looked like a Rescue and Recovery update, and supposedly installed it, but when I run R&R it's the same version number. Am I missing something? (This is on a brand new machine.) The version I have is 3.01.0037.00. The file I downloaded and ran is tvtrnr31_1022en.exe.

Thanks -- Barbara

Just had a rather bizarre hang-up with the System Update here ...
Yesterday I installed Zonelabs firewall and gave all the programs the right permissions to access the internet. After I performed a System Update, and it immediately downloaded some packages. After about 5% download it stops to tell me that it needs to update itself (system update) and that it needs to restart. I press OK ... all windows for system update dissappears. A few seconds later I receive an alert from the firewall that it just blocked a package going from my localhost to my localhost (loopback on the network card). System update refuses to go on ....

Even after I start system update again (with the firewall off), it reaches this 5% and says it needs to restart. But nothing happens.

I finally did end up restoring a backup from a few days back, and perform the system update again. The same happens, but this time it actually is able to restart itself. Strange ...

So it seems this software is a bit buggy ... If it happens again I am seriously considering uninstalling it and do my updates manually.

Cheers,
SW-Rick

I have had problems with Software Update for the last few weeks (-haven't we all!) It kept stopping after about 9% and saying 'Exception Not Expected was encountered!'

I discovered today that the reason I was having a problem was that I am using a proxy for the net connection. Remove the proxy, via control panel/ internet options and it works. (Mind you, it still tries to download out of date s/w!)

S/W Update did do a self-update, first time I finally got it working.

All I have to do now is remember to remove the proxy when I want to run it, then restore proxy for normal use.

Rick,

This is because your firewall no longer recognizes the updated software. Norton Firewall did this to me also. Have your firewall search for software again, or manually add the software to your firewall rules, and it will work again.

Will this System Update program allow the end users to choose which updates to install, like the Software Installer program?

Yes.
