Imaging T60 2007-4AU via Novell ZENWorks

#1 Post by Reidan » Fri Aug 18, 2006 4:39 pm

Greetings.
We recently purchased a batch of T60's, model 2007-4AU. Created my image and used Novell ZENWorks 7.0 to dump the image then load it onto a clean laptop. The unit will not boot off of the hard drive after it is imaged. Get a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner.

I have had imaging troubles with ZENWorks and IBM/Lenovo hardware before. But it usually something easy like no partition set active, or need to run fdisk /mbr. None of these are the problem.

Here is the weird thing, if I pull the hard drive out of the laptop and stick it into a desktop, the desktop will see the drive correctly and try to boot off of it. Of course the boot fails since it is the wrong hardware, but it does try to boot. This makes me think that the problem is in the BIOS and not the hard drive or the image.

I made some calls to our Lenovo Rep and got him to get me in touch with a engineer. He said his experience was same as mine with active partition and fdisk /mbr. He sent me a utility he said that IBM wrote called Cleanmbr.exe. Said to run it and see if it had any effect. So I ran it, but no change.

Tried using Ghost and used the -ib switch and got the same results. I have version 7.0. IBM said we needed 7.5 or higher for it to work with the Rescue and Recovery Partitions. I do not have this version so I could not test it.

I downloaded Acronis True Image and used it. This program works and I can get a good image load from it. Since we use ZENWorks for workstation management, I would like to get it working. Not to mention the fact that I have already paid for ZENWorks, I do not want to have to pay for another imaging suite.

So, my question is. What is Acronis doing that ZENWorks Imaging and older version of Ghost can not do? Is anyone on this forum using ZENWorks 7 to image their T60's? I aso have a X60, but I only have one of them so far, so I do not know if I am going to have the same imaging problem with that model.

Thanks for any help or guidance you can give.
