battery refuses to charge

#1 Post by rbsrao79 » Sat Aug 19, 2006 12:45 pm

Hi,
I was fiddling with the threshold settings in the Battery Maintenance tool. However, I swithed everything back to the original (96%-100). However now, the battery refuses to charge. Its getting slowly drained despite the computer being on AC. Changing the threshold options had no effect. I tried doing a battery reset but after sometime, the machine switched back to regular mode by itself without any indication of error. The battery however continues to discharge.

The Power Manager indicates that the battery is in "good" condition. The status indicates "no activity". This status does not change even on I unplugging the laptop (I presume it should say discharging).

Any advice ? Am I missing something ?

Sorry - I don't have a magic answer, as I've never had this issue. Maybe someone with more complete knowledge will have the direct answer.

But in similar situations, I've had good luck with the Windows System Restore. It should reset all settings back to the way they were.

Good luck.

Well,
I'll try that out...but honestly a system restore is nearly as painful as a dentist visit.

However, lets assume this was a windows setting issue, shouldn't the battery be charged when my laptops off (but plugged in)?

I tried calling lenovo, but apparently they can't take my case because their systems are down.

Just to confirm, is your charging set to "Always fully charge" or "Optimize for battery lifespan"?

It sounds like you might still have set the latter, even with the charging thresholds.

I've had this happen. Here was my particular circumstance:

Following a suspend-on-lid-close, I would open the laptop to find myself at a login prompt. Apparently the machine rebooted while suspended. The screen resolution would always reset from SXGA+ to something one click down from that. The last symptom was that the battery wouldn't charge at all.

The fix was to shut down the laptop, unplug AC, pull the battery, reinsert the battery and reboot. After that it would charge correctly until the next time I had the problem.

The latest BIOS update changelist seemed to suggest that it would address this problem and indeed the problem hasn't happened since I flashed to the latest rev, but I haven't used it long enough to draw any concrete conclusions from that.

Thanks. That's good advice. Although I am currently using the latest BIOS revision and having the same problem still.

Did pulling and reinserting the battery get it charging again?

Sorry for the delay in replying,

I had the latest bios when the problem occured. A full shutdown and removal of battery seemed to resolve it. However my battery seems to be bad. I only get 1.5 hours (even though it reports 2.5 at 100%).

I've spoken to lenovo and they are supposed to be sending me a replacement.
