Try booting a "live" Linux USB/CD/whatever and check whether you have LAN connectivity there. The cable should be plugged in the port while you're booting the system.

Have you tried disabling the Ethernet Boot ROM in BIOS setup?
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300

This simple solution to PXE-E05 error worked on my T-60 with Win 7 SP1 (x64) BIOS v 2.27 laptop:

1. Press F1 to access BIOS during the ThinkPad splash screen.
2. Select CONFIG > Network > Internal Network Option
3. Select Disable and F10 to Save and Exit.
