I'm guessing this is normal, but I just want to verify. My new T60 came with the brightness turned all the way up when I first turned it on. I had it plugged into the AC adapter and things looked pretty good. When I first unplugged the AC adapter, the computer beeped and the screen automatically dimmed, as if it were mechanical. I checked they brightness setting and it was still all the way up.

Is there a way to keep the screen at the same brightness when it's plugged in?

The behavior you saw was absolutely normal. If you want to maintain the same brightness levels on Ac and battery, you can change this in the BIOS. Change the display brightness setting from "normal" to "high."

Thank you. Is there a way to kill the beep that occurs when unplugging it?

Yes, you can also do that in the BIOS.

I stopped the beep by going into Power Manager -> Global Power Settings and uncheck "beep when power state changes." You may be able to do this from the BIOS also, but that's not the way I did it.

Think about it before you disable the beep. It does come in handy when one of the plugs wiggles loose, and you don't realize you're on battery until you get the Low Battery notice (and it always happens just when you NEED to go somewhere else where you won't have access to a power plug).

The screen brightness can also be controlled via the Power Managment profiles. The profiles allow for an initial brightess with the battery as power source and then a 2nd stage dimming with no activity prior to turning off the screen completely.

I'ts very simple to set this in "thinkpad configuration" also, clink on LCD and you can "enable screen to maximum brightness when running on batteries".

The beep is pretty loud, and would be too loud to go off in my quiet office. So, disabling it is the way to go for me. Thanks.

Isn't the power on/off beep proportional to whatever volume settings you have the machine set to? That's always been my experience, as the beep is much less audible when the system volume is set relatively low.

It was on my T40, but not on my T60p. The only settings for the beep seems to be LOUD and mute. I think I even raised a thread on this forum about it, and didn't get any response on how I could change its volume. At the moment I'm just living with it, but there are occasions where it's been embarrassing to have it go off really loudly while going into or out of Standby.
