oversize carrying case!

#1 Post by akela_topchi » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:42 am

Guys, I got my T60 today. It's really a great machine.
They delivered it 10 days before the expected shipping date. Kudos to Lenovo!

I also got the Nylon carrying case. But, the problem is, it seems to be oversize for the 14.1" laptop. The dimensions of the carrying case are 14"x16.5"x5".

When I customized my 14.1" laptop, I thought the carrying case would be sent as per the laptop size. But it does not seem so.

I am upset a bit. More so because I opened the package without checking the dimensions (on the box or on the internet)

Have anyone faced similar problem?
Will Lenovo be taking it back?

The bags are standard for all ThinkPads (I think they are all just rebranded bags from targus), a 14" T60 is fairly small (so much so, that it fits in many third-party bags advertised as 12" or 13") so there will be some extra room that would be used up for the other models, that said, when the padding straps are in all mines (i have the previous generation of bags except the backpack) it does seem to fit alright although it will still accomodate the larger models.

Official ThinkPad bags will generally not fit like a glove (you will normally pay a premium for any laptop bags that do as they will be quite model specific), but I think they are pretty good value all rounder bags and I love how much extra stuff I can fit in them when travelling.

i use an ancient body glove wetsuit bag made for an apple for my X60..
fits like.. well.. a glove..

and an OLD leather thinkpad bag for my T60p (without the 9 cell battery) which fits fine.. it could be a tad taller..
it has pockets all over and when i hed the tablet it would hold both..

the moral of the story is if it fits, use it..
if its too roomy, get a sleeve for the T60 and keep the thinkpad in the sleeve so it won't pick up scuffs from zippers or hard stitching..

OH, i also use the foam from a fedex padded pak to buffer the thinkpad surface from those hard stitch seams and the inside of the zipper..

If you want a snug and slim case, Booq Bags are good. The Powersleeve XM just fits my 14.1" T60.

Is the powersleeve not a bit tall for the T60? (given that it fits widescreen models)

Not really, it's just right. You could get a laptop that was an extra inch wider into the bag, but it wouldn't be as well protected on the sides.

I would use a sleeve to take up the space and further protect your expensive ThinkPad. The very best sleeves are made by Waterfield. I use them and they are durable, perfectly made with high quality materials and fit your ThinkPad like a glove. No looseness or excess material. Nothing to scratch or mar your computer. They are the only company that I know of with world class service and a wide range of sizes just for the various ThinkPad models.

Love my Trager

#8 Post by claudeo » Thu Aug 31, 2006 9:12 pm

I got a Trager Executive TransPorter (www.tragerusa.com) a few years back for my T21. Perfect fit also for my T42 and now my T60 1953. All 14" screen form factor, of course. It would be too small for a 15" screen ThinkPad. This bag gives good protection, has convenient storage for accessories, looks good enough to carry into a meeting, and it is still small enough to fit horizontally on top of a rolled up rain parka in an el cheapo jansport backpack. Weights almost nothing. US made. Except for the strap hardware that lost its black paint, still looks like new after 5 years. I definitely got my money's worth. Note: Besides the fact that they're located about 6 miles from where I live, I have no connection with Trager.
(Edited to add this afterthought: It might be a very tight fit with the extended battery. With the 6-cell no problem)
