Is the IPS screen worth it?

is the IPS screen on the T60 really worth the much higher price. It is going to be around $500 more just for that screen and the faster processor.

Ive never seen one before, But want to know if its truly worth it.

that`s up to yourself to decide

judging screens is a very personal things. you said you`ve seen one before, so you should know for yourself if that impression is worth the money.

for people doing extensive screenwork with maybe also phote editing I think it is

I really love the IPS screen, it's just about perfect. Of course, when I got my T60p, you weren't required to upgrade the proc to have the screen option. My 2623DDU was $2500 with a 3yr Next day service warranty

I say it all depends on what your using the computer for. How long you use it each day, etc.

I have both a T60 and T60p with the 15" flexview display. Then I have the T43 and T42 which have the non flexview and the difference is truly significant and really impressive. For me it's the best and most enjoyable display I've seen and used. I'm in front of the computer for as much as 10 hours per day and the Flexview truly reduces eye strain. The viewing angle is very usefull and the colors are eye popping. In addition, if you like to turn down the brightness on the display, with flexview the information on the screen remains quite easy to read at the lower brightness levels.

If it fits into your budget I would not hesitate, and you will not be sorry.

I would never buy a screen without IPS/Flexview. Never. IMHO it's worth it because it's easier on the eyes. Being gentle on your eyes IMHO is very important. So I'd 100% recommend it if you can afford it.

Yes - the IPS screen is worth it. Once you use one - you'll wonder why everyone else settles for those other screens.

Too bad it's only available in 15".

IMO 14" with Flexview would be perfect in an ideal world.

Wat would be even more perfect is a 12" SXGA (1280x1024) with Flexview on a X60. Alas, LG-Philips doesn't make IPS screens smaller than 15". Now... we don't live in a perfect world do we?

In response to the OP's query, YES! The IPS screen is thoroughly worth it. With mine (15" w IPS) and my brother's (14") T60 side by side, it's a world of a difference. I really can't begin to imagine how I survived all these years without it. If IBM/Lenovo decided to use good PVA (or MVA) screens on their 14" models, the decision to get the 15" just for its IPS screen would be indeed rather hard; but given the current quality of the 14" screen, it's almost a no-brainer especially if one spends a lot of time in front of the computer and requires a high-quality screen.

While I did have some qualms about ghosting on the IPS screens before I purchased my T60, I can safely say that I don't notice it. Granted I don't play games which have THAT much motion on screen (currently TOCA race driver 3 and Heroes 5), I think I can safely say that the IPS screen should be good for gaming.

Go for the IPS - it is defintiely worth the price. The screen is really beautiful, and a pleasure to work on.

A related question: would you go with a UXGA (1600*1200) or a SXGA+ (1400*1050) IPS screen?

What do you recommend?

That would be entirely up to you. It depends on what you're confortable with, how much screen real-estate you want/need and how quickly you want to go blind

If you're coming from XGA, then SXGA+ would be the easiest to get used to.

How about the added weight of a 15" T60 with IPS? Is it too bulky? I haven't seen a 15" T-series so I'm curious. I would like to have a 15" T60 with IPS but I'm not sure if its too big especially since I carry around my laptop everyday.

But comparing a Z60t and Z60m, I can really say that the Z60m is very bulky especially for travellers. Most 15" widescreen notebooks (except Macbookpros) seem very bulky but some 14" feel the same (like my HP DV1000).

Weight is one of the areas in which the 15" T60 falls short. It is heavy. But, weight wasn't an issue when I decided on it... it was the IPS. If you're gonna be carrying it around everyday, the 14" T60 or even the X60 might be a better option. You do not want to be carrying the 15" T60 on your shoulders everyday, that is, unless you're really well built and don't mind having back pain often. If you can find a good backpack, it might be an option though.

Personally, if I had wanted to carry my laptop around everyday, I would have gotten an X60 and would have assembled myself a new PC with a nice 19" LCD. Since I didn't have the option of buying a notebook AND a new PC, I chose the 15" T60 (for its IPS). I do carry it around on occasion, but I do try to keep it to a minimum, as it is rather heavy.

One of the many advantages of having an IPS screen that hasn't been mention here is the wide angle viewability. It proves most benefit when you need to present something on your laptop screen to a group of people which i do very often. With IPS screen there is almost no contrast issues that non IPS suffer from when viewed at an angle.

Yes! It's so worth it...in fact, I'd say it's love at first sight. I am so happy I got the 1600x1200 15in...let me expand on that...I just unpacked and started using my T60p. I go back to my desktop machine, which is running 1280x1024 native on a Samsung Syncmaster 170T...and I go, hmm, why does my display look so funny?

It's like...you're used to drinking plain ole tea. Then you try some marvelous British concoction and your tea at home will never taste as good as you thought it once was.

The IPS screen is absolutely amazing; colours are rich and text is razor sharp. Viewing angles are great too, you never have to wonder if you tilted it too far back and you're seeing too much contrast. The text is a little small at first, but it's so crisp and detailed! I don't have the best vision...but I don't mind the screen at all! Can anyone tell I'm happy with it?

IPS screes are nice with brighter colors and massive viewing angles. But it also consumes more power and it is heavier, so it could be an issue.

If your priority is portability and long battery life, then I would go for 14", which is non-IPS. For desktop replacement and occassional travel IPS is worth having.

do IPS sreens last as long as regular SXGA+ screens? i think i've read somewhere that the glossy screens have shorter life span than regular screens and one of the reasons was that they were much brighter.
