Black Border when dropping the resolution

I've got a number of "senior" users who don't like the 1400x1050 resolution. However on some of the computers dropping the resolution works like it's supposed to. It's full screen, but bigger (and a little blurry due to not being in the native res). However on some other systems, the screen shrinks and we are getting a black border around the screen.
For the life of me I can't figure out how to fix the issue. Any suggestions?

There should be an option in the bios called "expand screen". That should expand your screen when you change resolutions.

Stert->Thinkvantage->Thinkpad Configuration->LCD Screen Expansion" needs to be set to "Enable"

Do you know what utility that is to install? We have our own image and removed most of the thinkvantage software. The only things we have running are presentation director, Ultra Nav wizard, and Easy Eject.

The utility is ThinkPad Configuration. On my T42, there is also a BIOS setting to set this - I imagine the T60 is the same. ThinkPad Configuration just gives the option to set this from the Windows Interface.

Autostretching can be also be set in the ThinkVantage "preboot" utilities. But it results in rather ugly and sometimes hard to read results.
A couple of things you can do in Windows:
(you might use a program to capture the registry changes so you can automate the process with a reg file)
Right-click the desktop, Properties. Appearance tab, change font size to Large or Extra Large fonts. This will control size of things like caption bar titles. In the Settings tab, click Advanced, in the General tab change the dpi settings from 96 to 120. Try that, then larger if it is not large enough. This will affect the relative size of the system font and, for many applications, the base font size they use. It won't do much good with things that use pixel measurements though
There are also some useful hints in the Microsoft accessibility documents.

I've tried a couple of those things... I'm trying to resolve the issue without the use of additional software. A couple of things:
This is mainly only occuring with users who have docking stations.
Changing the DPI Settings is OK, but a lot of our users are using dual monitors and extending the desktops over to the external monitors.
Most of the problems seemed to happen after undocking and re-docking with the computer on.
