Major problems with my T60. Please Read!

Hey all,

Not jumping to conclusions, but I think my T60 is defective. This issue started happening a while back, but I thought it went away. I just started up my machine and booted into Windows fine. After everything was said and done, my mouse pointer kept freezing in 2 second intervals, the usb ports stopped working, sound was not working, it was giving system beeps, and also my wifi 802.11abg wasn't working!

I tried resetting the BIOS (newest version 1.11, this would also happen with 1.09, I do not remember if it was present in 1.06/1.07) to defaults but that did not help. This would only happen in battery mode and I believe no mouse plugged in. This is also a clean full build of XP Professional.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd run diagnostics before jumping to any more conclusions. Immediately after power-up, press the ThinkVantage button and choose the diagnostics in the menu on the left. Run the full suite of diagnostics, including the (lengthy and slow) memory tests.

I already ran it and it seems as if it had passed all tests.

Really weird.

Have you tried a reinstall?

I had the same problem and I think I've fixed it (at least it hasn't happened in the past week or so) Go into the device manager and go to the Intel PRO/1000 PL device and open it up. Go to the Advanced tab and select the Deep Smart Power Down property and disable it.

For me, since making the change I haven't had another episode of the cursor freezing one second in three.

Thank you. I will try that option.

Update: I had modified video card drivers installed, so I went ahead and reinstalled Lenovo's set. All seemed well untill last night.

The USB connectors did not work. Looking under Device Manager it stated "The driver is not working properly. Try reinstalling the driver." I pressed the reinstall driver button, but it said it would not find a better suited driver match for that device.

Also, in conjunction, the mouse started freezing up too. The wireless however, was working.

I'm really starting to think this machine is a lemon or one of the early ones. I still have issues with the docking station where it would completey shut off when warm docking. I even had the docking station replaced with the new updated one.

I'm going to try a full restore from the 6 recovery CD's and if that doesn't work, I'm going to have to call IBM tech support.

I will all keep you posted.

Just another piece of info. I too have the warm dock issue where it resets the machine (as many folks seem to with this model for what I've found on the net) Just didn't want you thinking that was specific to your machine.

Also, it wasn't clear to me from your post. Did you disable the Deep Power Off mode on the ethernet? Interested as if you did and the mouse is still freezing then you might try insalling Microsofts RATTV3 tool (availble as a free download from MS) This tool traces system calls and will show you what driver is consuming all of the resources (thus causing the mouse to hang)

Hope things work out

Clean build....you are not using the factory preload? Not good....XP is old compared to new hardware, it causes issues. You are not doing yourself a favor with a clean build. Better to use the factory preload, and uninstall from Add/Remove programs what you don't want...

At a minimum, apply all the recommended hotfixes for a T60 from here:

How do we know if we need those hotfixes. I was just reading this forum and saw it. I don't have any problems with my T60, but should i install some of those hotfixes anyway? Some of them sound pretty serious, like the battery life one and multi processor fix.

Yes, I disabled Deep Power off mode. I will test it once I'm out from work :)

You need them. They are part of the factory image. if you built your own, apply them. However, building your own image is NOT a good idea nowadays. Use the factory one...

You want all your problems to vanish...apply the factory image, update it with the software installer or system update....

I have confirmed my issue to be all due to the "Deep Smart Power Down" feature.

Disabling it seemed to have stopped my issue.

I remember Lenovo had disabled this feature via the BIOS, then reenabling it later on.

Anyone else with this issue? It happens randomly.
