T60p and UltraBay SATA hot swap

#1 Post by remaker » Thu Sep 14, 2006 2:48 am

OK, this is killing me, has anyone seen this?

I am using a SATA ultrabay tray (which presents to the O/S as a PATA drive... I presume the Ultrabay SATA tray does SATA->PATA converison). If I put in the tray and boot, I see both drives. If I hot-insert the drive tray after I have already booted to Windows XP, I see some activity on the hard drive light blinking but then the drive activity light goes on SOLID. Nothing hangs, but the drive never appears in disk manager or My Computer.

Can anyone hot-insert a SATA Ultrabay tray anywhere? In a T60/p? Would this be a driver, BIOS, or hardware issue? Or some mix?

I am about to load Vista, so I will see if that does any better.

How do I do that?

I don't understand the suggestions... Where is that setting made? And wouldn't it also fail to recognize it ever under those circumstances?

go to thinkpad configuration ... click Device Bay and look to see if Second IDE Device is enabled ... if not enable and try it out ... if this is disabled my understanding is that you cannot Hot Swap.

beyond that perhaps someone else has ideas

do a hard reboot, preferably with CD drive in the UB, then try a hot swap..
it SHOULD work..

but i see that it does NOT, even though the eject hardware sees the drive, file manager does not..
and selecting eject the SATA drive from the UB seems to work..

now mostly all i do is use a USB drive adapter..
quick in and quick out..

so this IS a new one..

as for enabling the UB in TP config, it should already be so if the CD drive can be seen..

give me some time to play with this..
must feed the birds now or they will start to complain..

EDIT: birds complaining, never mind..
a quick look at device manager shows that IT sees the CD and when i remove the CD it sees THAT..
then when i insert the HDD (SATA) it sees THAT happen but file manager does NOT see it..
thats a very interesting occurance..

now i must admit i have not updated (or even checked for updates) in at least 6 weeks on this T60p..
so lets all check for updates before complaining too much..

OH, BTW, vista loads and runs but unless you can find drivers for it for the T60, it is tough to do much..
the chess game is nice..

euhm, since it presents itself as a PATA drive:
If it's using a S-ATA to PATA convertor, hotswapping won't be possible.

first, are we sure it is converting from SATA to PATA..?
and if so, why would it NOT see the drive that is inserted..
the hardware detects the new drive, the OS seems to see it too yet does not present it in file manager..

acronis sees it..
but HEY!, this is the HDD i put OS-X on..
i need to try this with a windows HDD..

wait..

EDIT.... HAH..! ..!!
it ALL works perfectly..

so i ask you what is ON that HDD you are inserting..?
if no OS, then THAT might be your problem..

because now, acronis disk director and file manager and device manager ALL see the HDD..
which, BTW, has vista loaded on it..

this is a tempest in a teapot.. 8)

It you look in Device Manager, the SATA drive appears as a PATA device. So I assume that the tray does SATA to PATA conversion.

PATA does not support hot insertion?

I discovered that if I suspend and then resume after insetion, the drive WILL be recognized. But I can't hot-insert.

It does NOT appear in device manager unless

- it is inserted before boot
OR
- a suspend/resume cycle is made after insertion

PATA cannot Hot Swap, I believe because of the pin design ... something about not being able to connect both system and power at once (?) whereas the SATA can because of its pin design

sounds almost as if it is not SATA but PATA ... is this possible?

I have hot swapped my PATA drive using the UB caddy many times.

in a thinkpad T series, SATA and PATA can hot swap..
period..
if there is no recognizable (by windows) file system on the inserted HDD there will be nothing for the OS to see other than the hardware..

there is no conversion going on in the UB 2nd HDD adapter..

and

if the OP has a file system or windows OS on the HDD he is attempting to insert "hot" then the hardware, if operating correctly, will see it and the same for the OS..

i tested this on my T60p when this thread erupted and was just doing it now..

if his CD can be seen by the UB then it follows that the HDD also should be seen..

so, i ask, WHAT IS ON THAT HDD..?? :)

You might try this:

Plug in the HD Bay. In Windows Explorer, right-click My Computer, choose Manage. In the Computer Management console, click Disk Management. Disk 0 is the main hard disk. It should show Disk 1 but it might not be enabled. Right-click Disk1 and there should be an option to enable it. Right-click also gives you partition manipulation and formatting options. After this -- assuming that it is formatted -- Windows Explorer should recognize it.
You should be able to eject it safely by using the Safely Remove Hardware on the system tray. Although in theory using it is not required for mass storage devices, in practice it is a good idea because it will tell you whether it is OK or not to remove the device. There might still be, unbeknownst to you, an open file or other dependency that would make it risky to remove the device.

Ultrabay HDD

#15 Post by remaker » Wed Sep 20, 2006 11:38 am

Just to be clear:

It doesn't MATTER what is on the disk: It could be blank, formatted, whatever... When I insert it it WILL NOT APPEAR in disk manager. That's DISK MANAGER, not My computer. Disk manager will display a live drive no matter what is on it.

The Ultrabay drive only appears if:

1) I have it installed when I boot.
2) I do a suspend/resume cycle after inserting it.

In the first case, the Ultrbay drive is assigned DRIVE 0
In the second case, the Ultrabay drive is assigned DRIVE 1.

What I am expecting is to be able to insert the drive on a running system and have it appear in Disk Manager.

The drive is a SATA drive. It *ALWAYS* shows up as a PATA drive in disk manager.

I am using this drive to beta test Windows Vista, or else I would try the same insert function in Vista.

So I have worked abound the problem with the Suspend/resume trick, but it still bothers me.

I might try the Vista 2.0 beta BIOS for the T60. Vista drivers at
