Ah nifty, well that helps my decision. I was getting rather bent out of shape about that. Since you appear far more knowledgable about them than I am, is there any significant difference in a 14.1inch TFT and a 15 inch TFT+flexview monitor? I have no idea what flewview entails.

Thats a good thing I take it? why wouldnt the T60p have that if its the pricier model? (This is retorical.)

Better question, is there a place to explain what nits are? I would edit but all the buttons just went wonky on the site for me. Wide angle viewing is less important to me than performance but a dim monitor is aweful.

Nits are candela per meter square - used as a measurement of screen brightness for display cubes.


Basically the higher the Nits the brighter the screen. I have decided to wait for the flexview version of the 20078ju. Hopefully it comes out in the next couple weeks.

You know, a 15" flexview UXGA+ superbrite.

Well I'm coming from an Inspiron 9300 which is just barely bright enough so Im a bit nervous about it. The 14-15 is pretty minor in my opinion considering Im already downsizing the monitor. Is the 50 nit difference significant? My dell was apperently a 200 nit monitor and if thats 200 nits I want 300.

I'm Jealous already. I need to get my girlfriend bigger nits.

The 50 nit difference is pretty big. Side by side, a 14" T-series next to a 15" T-series w/ flexview, the 15" is brighter, and the colors more vibrant. I really like the 14" form factor. For some reason, the 15" t-series are not only wider, but also thicker as well. I switched to a 15" and like the screen a lot, but still I consider it a heavy compromise as it no longer feels like the T-series I've grown accustomed to. I'm encouraged by what HP did with their nw8440 - shoving a 15" widescreen (1680x1050 or 1920x1200) on a laptop that's as thin as the 14" t-series. I hope the rumored widescreen T-series will also have such a thin profile.

is .2" really that much? I am not a huge fan of the carbon fiber tops on these R60's, is the magnesium one any different? because upgrading a hard drive and video card isnt the hardest thing in the world to accomplish anyway.

I prefer non-IPS screens because I don't need the brightness and it takes extra battery power. I'm typing on a X60s and love my all day long battery without having to bring a spare.

I'm not really concerned with the brigtness on the 14 inch on my upcoming 2007-8JU shipment because I will be using it on a 21 inch ViewSonic VP211b.

Thats mostly where my concern is. I tend to use my laptop at schools where Im plugged into switches and working on servers so battery life is nice but if I cant see the screen Im kind of boned. Though something people can see at wide angles may not be something I want in a high school where Im typing server passwords.

I don't think thatt you will have any problem.
I had two Transnotes with touch sctreens, also X20, X30 with no problems as to viewing. My X31 is just fine.

I'm now using A31P, and T43P.

The reason that I went to the ViewSonic 21.2 inch is because
I do a lot of Photo work.
Gee I had to turn the brightness way down on the ViewSonic
even at 1600 and AVG input.

What? I seriously do. You should see how dim her screen is. I keep offering to pay for a nit enhancement and she keeps telling me no.

But on a *even* more serious note, if 150 nits is figured to be enough that will work for me. I want performance more than I want brightness. Though I will curse you all if I cant see anything on the screen.

Well yeah but I like to make assumptions.

That's not going to get you very far as long as 98% of all laptops still have gfx chips embodied and soldered to the motherboards.

But, you might be in luck every now and then

A Lenovo sales rep today said T61p's will ship this coming summer..

So I caved and ordered a 9450-AIU (a maxed z61p with a Core 2!)

Yeah a year wait is just to long. Especially when I've been getting hounded to buy one for the last 3 weeks alreadty.

Sorry if I stay kind of out of topic...

I don't understand thoses seeking for the highest nits/brightness of lcd screen. For me, using a screen at his max brightness setting just give me headache when I try to stare the screen or trying to concentrate in a normally lighted place, I can feel it "hurting" my eyes.

I'm using desktop dhell at my work and the default setting of the screen is maxed out (both brightness, and contrast) and I can't understand how my coworker can leave and live with the default setting without having headache, surely the same behavior than using 60hz setting on crt...

In this very case, setting to both settings to minimum value just work fine for me.

The only thing that I find annoying with laptop's lcd screens is varying luminosity when tilting the screen, perhaps IPS is better than standard screen in this case?

Well if a half setting is bright enough for me then awesome. the problem is at max setting my dell is so dim I have to squint.

Well guys, what's the real difference other than +- 15% CPU perfomance and 64bits bus (for inexistent software) if graphics, screen, storage, keyboard, rugedness and overall reliability are the same than core duo T60s ? Is it worthy the upgrade? I received confirmation of my order for a 200765S on 10/17 and think that's a nice and updated config no lesser than the recent "out of the oven" ones...

Not only that, but upgrading to the fastest chip is half price compared to the other day IIRC. Way too tempting

Hey all,

I just sold my 17" Gateway laptop to get something more portable. I heard great reviews on the monolithic laptop of all laptops- the ThinkPad. I am extremely excited and eager to join the ranks!

As soon as I sold my laptop, I was ready to get my new one. But I decided to wait for the Core 2 Duo to come out, 'cause I want to use it for 2-5 years and future-proof it (64 bit), so I want to splurge and go big ($2500ish) now and keep it for a while and not need to replace it.

I saw this first post, and decided to wait a couple more weeks for a widescreen/glossy screen. I know this is an issue of debate, but I have used both and for my own personal preference and use, I prefer the wide/gloss screen.

But then I read this second post, and now I'm all confused. I am eager to buy the laptop, so maybe I'll get a current Core 2 Duo. If I have to wait 'till next summer, I'm definitely not waiting any longer. On the other hand, if it is soon to be announced (and these are unrelated), then I am definitely waiting to shell out that much money on a machine I want to be perfectly happy with and not have any annoyance.

Does anyone have any insight to offer into this predicament?
