Is cingular WWAN modem user-installable?
Just got a T60p. Does anyone know if you can order the cingular WWAN component and install it yourself -- or is this ONLY available as a factory-installed option?
It is not considered a customer replaceable unit. Yet you can purchase it for a cool $519.00 US.
FRU part number is 42T0804. You will also need a SIM card.
It is possible you will need the SIM card slot as well.
FRU part number is 41W1131, $8.77.
If it was me, I would avoid the hassle and just get one of the Cardbus cards currently available for much less money.
EDIT: Oh, and you will need the WWAN antenna which fits in the display.
14.1" display WWAN antenna, FRU 91P6988, $23.00.
15" display WWAN antenna, FRU 91P6989, $24.50.

This makes me wonder... what if I were to take mine apart and flog it on eBay? I would probably need make an exchange with the buyer to get the little panel that covers up the antenna bit that sticks out from the screen though...
How easy/difficult would it be to extricate the WAN stuff from my T60p? I have absolutely no use for it since it's locked to Verizon (US), and I live in Australia.

Or you can just use a bluetooth phone with Internet (or tethered with a cable.
For instance, I have a Cingular 8125 smartphone with MediaNet Unlimited. This adds $20 per month and I get unlimited Internet. I rarely connect with my laptop though as I have wifi just about everywhere I work. When I do need to access the net for a quick email or something, I just use the phone. Technically, if you tether to laptop you are supposed to get their data plan at $40 per month but it is the same.
Anyway, just wanted to bring up the idea of using an Internet enabled phone to connect your laptop to the net. Much less expensive as you don't need a seperate media card account.
