internal bluetooth device can't be found in windows XP...

OK, I'm at my wits end here. I can't get windows to recognize my bluetooth adapter. I did a clean install of XP and this is the last hurdle to climb... and I have no idea what else to try, so here we go.

Symptoms:
- XP(SP2, fully patched) doesn't recognize the bluetooth adapter.
- the bluetooth logo on the LCD screen DOES illuminate when the system boots.
- trying to add(pair) a bluetooth device gives the error:
- - - - "windows cannot find any bluetooth devices"
- both the "bluetooth service" and the "bluetooth support service" are "stared" in the XP services control panel.
- device manager shows only "Bluetooth Bus Enumerator" under the "bluetooth devices"
- - - - Should there be anything else here? I've never seen a working T60 so I can't tell?
- "my bluetooth places" will open, but clicking on any of the options gives the error "no local bluetooth device was detected"

Things I've checked and/or tried already:
- the main wireless switch is ON
- Fn-F5 allows me to power on/off both 802.11 and bluetooth
- removed and installed the bluetooth enh. data rate software (multiple times)
- the bluetooth firmware update will NOT work because XP doesn't recognize the device.
- BIOS is the latest rev available
- Bluetooth is enabled in BIOS (as are all other integrated HW features)
- There are no "unrecognized" devices in Device Manager

anyone else got any good ideas?

I think you screwed yourself here by dumping the factory preload...

If I remember correctly, Microsoft has a Bluetooth stack of its own that can interfere with the Lenovo one from the website...

WHY did you wipe the factory preload! Big mistake...recommend you consider a factory recovery....

My machine doesn't come with the factory preload -- I work for a very large company and we get our new ThinkPads preloaded with a customized build of XP. The problem is that our IT people insist on loading a suite of {security, antivirus, enterprise, internal-management, wireless, yada, yada, yada} software into this build, so by the time it gets to me, there's so much crap running on the machine that it's already slow as molasses. The first thing I do with every thinkpad I get is wipe it and put a brand-new install of windows on it... it makes the machine usably-fast again. In any case... your tip about the MS incompatibility led me to this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=840635

which looks very close... however, I've tried the workaround of renaming the.inf file and reinstalling, but that hasn't worked.. (yet?)
Can someone who has this thing working give me the list of what is reported under bluetooth devices in Device Manager for a working system? That will help me figure out which driver I need to manually load (I think...)

My BT works and under Device Manager > Bluetooth Devices it shows:
- Bluetooth Bus Enumerator
- Thinkpad Bluetooth with Enhanced Date Rate

and under Ports it shows: Bluetooth Communications Port (COM5)

Not sure if any of these help:
