Issues with Powerplay and standby

my T60P is an amazing system and it is a step ahead of the T42 that I used to have in terms of build quality and system performance. However, there is one problem that I can't seem to resolve about this new system.
The problem is that if powerplay is enabled and the ATI GPU is downclocked. Then when I try to go into standby, the waiting for standby screen gets badly corrupted and the system will randomly go into standby or freeze completely.
If the system does somehow go into stanby, then there's almost a 90% chance that it won't come back from it, or if it does then the system barely usable with stop and go freezes.
This problem goes away as soon as powerplay is disabled. Being a laptop, I expect to use the T60P most of the time off of the battery, so running without powerplay is not an option, I'd also like to make use of the stanby function so I don't have to wait 30 seconds every time for the system to start up. So just wondering what people's experiences are with a problem like this or where I could start to troubleshoot the problem without resorting to the last ditch option of sending the system in to IBM.
