SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter Problems
SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter Problems
I'm trying to use a Hitachi 5400rpm drive (HTS541010G9SA00) with the SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (40Y8725) in my T60. I formatted the drive and got rid of the IBM partition (it was the original drive that came with my T60). Now, whenever I boot up with the adapter inserted windows pops up the Found New Hardware "Wizard" and wants to find a driver for HTS54. It can't find anything to install automatically so I cancel. After this the drive works fine and I can make backups to it etc. But everytime I boot up it keeps popping up the Found new hardware message which is quite annoying. If I point it to the system32\driver folder it still fails to find anything.
If I go to Device Manager > Disk Drives, the HTS54 under the Driver tab has Unknown, N/A, but under Driver Details it has 4 drivers listed from the system32\driver folder (the same as listed for my primary HTS72 7200rpm drive).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the drive/adapter to work properly? I recently did a factory restore and I'm hoping I don't have to do it again...
thanks

I'll try answering this again...
I tried to post a (long) response to this question a couple of days ago. But, the forum was malfunctioning and never posted it (and I lost the text so I didn't take the time to rewrite it).
Here is the jist of what I had to say (write if you don't get anything and I'll try to explain better):
1- Repartition and reformat using the Disk Management tool within the "Computer Management" application (part of the WinXP Administrative Tools). This should repair the damage to the driver.
and/or
2- Delete all the drivers first (if you can) and then do the repartition and reformat.
If either of these approaches don't fix it, then report back.

Thank you for the help wallybear. I did as you suggested (I think):
1. Using Disk Management I deleted the partition, selected new partition, then formatted as 1 primary partition, then Windows popped up "found new hardware, searching for drivers - your hardware is installed and ready to use". It reports the drive as Healthy. So far so good. But when I right click the drive and select properties it says Driver Provider unknown, Driver date N/A. When I reboot the Found New Hardware HTS541010G9SA00 pops up again and finds nothing to install.
2. I went to the drive properties > Driver > Uninstall. Then the drive disappears from Disk Management. Then I restart and the Found New Hardware HTS541010G9SA00 pops up again and finds nothing to install.
So no luck yet,
thanks

Well I think there is something wrong with my laptop. I bought a USB enclosure for the hard drive and when I plug it in the Found New Hardware message pops up and it can't find the proper driver to install (it should find system32\drivers\usbstor.sys). It works fine on my desktop and on an Asus laptop at work - it installs as a mass storage device.
I also plugged a USB key into my T60 and it pops up a found New Hardware message and can't find anything to install. Argghh, this is close to the problems with Access Connections and Bluetooth I was having here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=29939
I did a complete factory restore 2 weeks ago and it fixed things. But now the dreaded Found New Hardware popup comes up and it can't find the proper driver to install. This is exactly what happened with my Bluetooth. It's like something has gotten messed up again since the restore and new hardware isn't getting recognized by Windows properly. I might have to look for something that I installed along the way...

That's weird that you would get the new device detected in both the bay and a usb enclosure. I don't have much experience with the T60s where I work but I've never seen that behavior with any T20 to T43p I've worked on.
Have you tried burning the IBM HD Firmware CD and putting the drive temporarily back in the T60 and boot the firmware CD and see if has an update for that drive?
If this is a system under warranty I'd suggest calling IBM phone support and see what they say.

Do you have the Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed?

Also, what about the Intel Chipset drivers and the Windows XP update modules?

If you have Windows System Restore installed, you might try going back to a restore point.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. It is indeed weird. I checked for the Intel Manager, chipset driver and Windows updates and they are all ok. I then put the 5400rpm drive back in the laptop and restored an image I had saved after I did a factory restore and with only a few applications installed (and with all windows and IBM updates). With this version both the drive bay adapter and the USB enclosure are found and installed properly. So it seems as though something has been messed up in the last 2 weeks by installing office, itunes, matlab, acrobat pro, Registry First Aid (only removed safe entries), Spybot, Nero, Photoshop, PerfectDisk etc.
When I first got the laptop in August I installed some programs and then during a Software Update my Access Connection and wireless drivers were updated and AC stopped working. I went to install Bluetooth I would get the "Found New Hardware... can't find a driver to install message". I assume the update of AC failed for the same reason. I restored the laptop, BT and AC were then working, installed some programs and now whenever I install any new hardware I get the same message. So it is likely something that I've installed. The tricky part will be finding out what that was. I'm thinking of uninstalling the usb enclosure driver then seeing if it works after each program install. I've searched but I can't find anything similar.

I had a problem with Nero INCD on a desktop PC. It would no longer boot into Safe Mode. I was getting an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL error. Since I had just installed Nero, I uninstalled INCD (as I suspected that component), and the problem went away.
Try unistalling Nero and see how it works. Or at least try unistalling INCD. IBM's counterpart program DLA sometimes causes problems too, although I haven't had a problem with it. But then again, although it is installed, I choose not to have the optical drive use it.

Thanks Gomjabber, I finally had some time to work on this. I tried to unistall one program at a time to see if I could find the culprit. No luck though, and Nero was one of the programs to go. I ended up restoring to a time when I had few apps, and then installing one program at a time and checking if the Found New Hardware would work on a USB memory stick. So far so good. I think I'm back to normal finally - the only programs I haven't installed are Reg First Aid, Motorola Phone Tools, MS streets and trips, so I suspect it was something in one of those. Strange. I'm still apprehensive every time I plug in something new.GomJabbar wrote:Try unistalling Nero and see how it works. Or at least try unistalling INCD.
