Threre are several ways to set up the external display.

1. Cloned or Mirrored desktop. The same picture is shown on both the built-in display and the external display.

2. Single mode. Only the internal OR the external is active.

3. Extended desktop. Both screens are active, and they combine to form one large desktop.

To answer your question, I think what you need to do is this:

- Press Fn F7 (slowly, one or two times) until you see only your internal display active.
- Go to Display Properties. Click on the display #2, and check both boxes for using as primary monitor and extending your desktop to it.
(note: if you can't select the monitor as primary, then go into the BIOS setup and set the external display as primary).

You need to have the external display set primary in order to watch HDTV movies on it (with most players, anyway).

I hope this helps.

are you trying to modify presentation director to allow for a larger resolution, or are you hamstrung by the settings tab in the display properties?

If it's presentation director, create a new profile, then export it. Open it up in a text editor, change 1600 x 1200 to the desired resolution, then import it back in.

This is how I have presentation director running widescreen to my external monitor (1920 x 1200)

If it's the settings tab in windows, you may need to update the driver for the monitor and/or video card - I'm not sure what it's max resolution is - sorry I just got this thing a few weeks ago.
