Minor performance issues

Well, I think they're video related...might be the hard drive also.
First thing is when I boot up and get to the login screen is pretty quick, until I log in. Once I scan my finger or type in my password and hit enter there's a 3-5 second delay where there's no HD activity and nothing happens then the start bar and icons start popping up.
Second thing is opening the lid while logged in or unlocking the computer after I've been away for a while and the screen saver has come up. Any of the icons in the tool tray (next to the clock in the start bar) and some times the Start button itself will be gray or blacked out for 1-2 seconds then work normally.
Some info on my laptop:
T60P, 2GHz w/2GB of RAM & 100GB 7200RPM SATA drive. It also has the FireGL 5200 video card. It's got a fresh install of XP SP2 and Omega video drivers. All drivers were loaded correctly and I have a decent amount of software installed now but none of it affected my old Gateway 7508GX (2.2GHz AMD64, 1GB RAM and 80GB 4200RPM drive w/ATI x600 video) this way. Hell, that laptop actually booted into Windows faster than this T60P!!!
I'm completely stumped as to why my new 2GHz dual core laptop with better video, faster hard drive and twice as much RAM booted SLOWER (by 5-10 seconds) than my old laptop. Granted, once Windows loads up all my apps load much faster by why would it boot slower and have these kinds of issues with the video?
