Is the T60 picky about non-lenovo DVD burners?

#1 Post by idebb » Sun Oct 22, 2006 1:42 pm

The lenovo multiburner is really expensive...can slap in any kind of slim 9.5mm DVD burner or will the T60 punish me for not being faithful?

Any suggestions? I´d prefer a slot load one but it´s no big deal.

kind regards

Well, there is technically no preference, except for firmware (which you can change), but you will have to make sure that it fits both the Ultrabay and the port inside. That last instructions I saw for rigging one's own optical drive as such only went up to include the T30 as the "latest" model that it had been attempted on. That said, you also have to deal with the problem of really expensive 9.5mm drives that, for the most part, Matshita/Panasonic make. The closest slot-loading optical drive comparable to the ones in the T60s would have to be the ones that the MacBook Pros use; Matshita is one manufacturer and I am forgetting who the other one is. :)

Hmmm...ok now I know why I didn´t find any posts about this.

All 9.5mm burners are very expensive not just the lenovo.

So...

1. Either buy a T60 with DVD-RW from the very beginning
2. Get an external
3. Buy the lenovo one from ebay

Too bad none of the new core2duo models exept the T60P (too expensive) has the DVD-RW.

Many thanks :) !

Buying a 5.25" internal DVD burner and housing in an external enclosure would be about your best option and wouldn't be very expensive. Most of the quality DVD burners for desktops are only $30-$40 and you can get a good external case for around $20-$25. A 5.25" DVD burner will burn much faster and will do higher quality burns then any internal slimline DVD-RW. That's why i would always suggest a user just get a DVD-ROM in their ThinkPad considering the cost of upgrading to the DVD-RW.

Yeah, getting an external and a bare OD seperate is probabily the most effcient thing to do. Although, if you really need the DVDRW ability built in, no matter what, you should think about getting one from IBM/Lenovo as they have improved over what was offered with the T4X series slimline ODs. :)

Update!

The model I was looking at has finally come to Sweden and ships with an internal DVD burner. :D

However to make things more complicated I´ve decided, I´ll probably want to use the optical bay for a second harddrive
most of the time.

Is there a type of USB external case for the 9.5" slim DVD burner
so I can exchange data between the harddrive in the adaptor
and the DVD drive? This way I wont have to buy a second DVD burner just for this.

How about a slim dvd writer in a slim usb enclosure. Check out meritline.com, they appear to have a nice selection. Very portable and does not require an ac adapter. And there's the advantage of being able to use it with any pc not just one with a 9.5mm bay.

Since there are no USB enclosures for 9.5" laptop DVD burners right?
