Half of that is hypermemory; system RAM being used.

Yeah, i've seen it in some situations to.
Is this what it is in other words? :
256 MB dedicated memory and 256 MB "not-dedicated" memory.

It is the ATI HyperMemory system at work; it will use that extra amount of system RAM should it ever need to. The advantage is that it is pre-sorts and minimizes fragments in the the memory for better performance should it ever need to use it in addition to the on-board VRAM. It doesn't take away memory for everyday use either.

Vista reports this memory usage more accurately...

I've just installed Vista RC1 on my T60 with an X1300 GPU.
The Properties dialog reports the memory usage accurately unlike Windows XP which does not. Under XP, the HyperMemory cards report a total of 512MB available to the GPU. This is not correct.
For the X1300, here is what's really happening:
64MB of on-board graphics RAM is supplemented, if needed, by up to 256MB of system RAM to give a total of 312MB total that could be available to the X1300 if needed.
The X1400 has 128MB of graphics RAM, so the total it can have available to it is 384MB (128 + 256 "borrowed" = 384).
The v5200 has 256MB of graphics RAM, so when it borrows the maximum of 256 from system RAM there is a total "available" of 512MB.
I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if it is. Thanks.

Are you sure of this? I'll run dual screen later to monitor ram usage whilst running 3d to confirm or disprove this, though I see the logic in it.
