Received Core 2 Duo T60 today - a few changes, one question

For those of you curious about the changes, there is now a "lenovo" label directly to the left of the "T60" label on the bezel. otherwise, it is identical in physical appearance to my previous T60.
as I expected, my 2007-6PU shipped with a Samsung panel. Hydis is in bankruptcy so I seriously doubt we'll be seeing any of their panels in the near future, if at all. fortunately this samsung lcd is fine - slightly pink, but not bad at all.
as for software, the T60 now ships with Symantec Client Security rather than the consumer version of Norton AntiVirus that shipped previously. Can anyone tell me if this is worth keeping? if not, should I go back to Windows Live OneCare? or CA AntiVirus 2007?
in terms of other components, I received a 120GB Fujitsu hdd which is fast and quiet, as well as a Chicony keyboard and Panasonic 9-cell. all in all I am quite happy.
EDIT: I just realized my first two T60's also shipped with the Symantec Client Security application (which includes Norton AntiVirus Corporate edition) rather than the consumer version.

My regular T60 came with symnatec client security rather than norton. It does it's job fine, however I'll be installing Nod32 instead anyway, that program has worked for me for years.

We want some pics of the C2D T60

Please post them if you can!
I recieved a copy of Symantec Client Security with my T60 I bought in august as well, and after having used a corprorate version very similar to this at work, I'll say that it is much better than the consumer work you get.

You would most likely be able to do away with the pinkishness with a monitor calibration device like a Huey or an Eye-One Display 2 or a ColorVision Spyder.

Actually no, the pinkish hue is a panel issue. The apple cinema displays had the same issues at one time, and those simply had an entire panel exchanged when a RMA was requested.

I'd be interested to know how that works (not that I doubt it, I'm just interested). I figured that the calibrator could make up for that (by seeing that 0R 0G 0B was being displayed as XR 0G 0B and then creating a profile to artificially reduce R by X amount).

When did you order it? Seems fast shipping.
pinkish hue resolved; noticing some fan noise

sure enough, just going into the advanced settings of the ATI Catalyst Control Center and adjusting the contrast & gamma took care of the color. it's amazing how much you can change the look of these panels. now I prefer the Samsung over the Hydis panel - it seems brighter (though perhaps the Hydis has dimmed after 5 months of use?)
the jury is still out on Symantec Client Security - is this thing a performance hog like the consumer version?
on another note, I'm noticing the fan runs a bit more on this new machine. the processor is faster (2.16 v. 1.86) than my previous T60, merom runs a bit hotter (I made a post about that issue on these forums) and the X1400 probably throws off a bit more heat than the X1300, so it's completely logical and expected.

No, I can assure you that this version is not a memory hog.

ordered 10/17 at 9pm, imaged on 10/19, shipped 10/29 at 3:30pm from HK, delivered to DC on 10/31.
fyi - when I placed the order the estimated ship date was 10/31.

Ordered mine 2623KFU at 10/24 via education program, wish it can come as quick as yours.

That's pretty weird, must be an inherent problem in the colour profile, rather than in the panel, good for youin that case!

the pinkish hue on this panel wasn't as bad as I've seen on other samsungs in the past so that is the most likely reason. I'll try to get some pictures uploaded soon. in the meantime, these are some panels I've photographed over the past year:

From those photo's the TMD doesn't look that bad! I was hoping the samsung screen would be as good as the one found in my desktop 173P (which cost me some 800 usd back in the day), but all in all, my TMD, which I consider inferior to the desktop, has been better than most laptops I have seen, with the MBP's being a proud exception.
The 6214w zepto screen has such horrific light leakage that its black is more of a gray on 66% of the screen...

What exactly is it that a person can tell from a photo of a screen? I see them all the time but I have no idea what I am looking for (because I have no idea what aspects of the photo are realistic depictations - well except for light leakage).

You can see relative brightness, color variances and viewing angle performance. Have a look at the pictures and see for yourself.

Well, I get that you can see the color variances (I didn't know if the angle viewing aspect was really an accurate projector or not...since it apparently is, the screen on my current laptop much really stink, can't wait for my flexview), those could very well be difference in color temperature. I mean, if the white balance is off in the camera, the monitor will appear to have a color variance (for instance, take a photo of a TV with daylight balanced film or setting your digital camera to daylight white balance, the TV will be blue but you know your TV isn't blue)>

Thanks for the fantastic post!
I always heard the rhetoric about the different displays, but this perfectly gives some hard substantial stuff to look at.
You can clearly see it!

I've a TMD (Toshiba M a t s u s h i t a Displays) too and it is by far the best display i've had in one of my laptops, color density (saturation) is awesome, brighness and contrast, resolution and refresh rate too.
Another minor change: the button to open the lid changed from grey to black, kudos on that Lenovo!!! (something that spoiled the front design in earlier T60s)

Wow, can we get some pics of the lenovo brand? I just ordered a T60 to replace a T42 that the ezserv depo destroyed (over the course of 3 mail-ins).
Anyways, I dislike lenovo, especially their branding. It takes away from the plain black aesthetics.
How can you tell which LCD your machine is using? Is it listed on the parts page with everything else?
*Im so bumbed about the T60 lenovo branding. I know it sounds bad, but its enough to make me think twice about buying a TP again. It seems like with every release lenovo is plastering their ugly name and logo over more and more things. - I bet the T61s wont have an IBM logo on the lid or palm rest, rather an ugly gray lenovo logo. =(

I wouldn't count on that. Lenovo paid for the rights to use the IBM name for 5 years, and companies don't like to pay for something (especially branding rights) that they don't plan on using.

Yeah, dropping the valuable IBM Thinkpad branding, after paying alot for the rights to it for 5 years, makes *plenty* of sense...doesn't it?

They will try to get people accustomed to seeing "Lenovo" on their products, at first in addition to the IBM brand. They will eventually phase out the "IBM" and replace it with "Lenovo." Remember, though, that they didn't just pay for the IBM brand, they paid for the "Thinkpad" brand. What we will probably see is the IBM Thinkpad logo being replaced with the Lenovo Thinkpad logo. While it may not be what we're used to, I can live with it so long as they dont change anything else (mmm flashy blue lights! white thinkpads!).

You know, for Thinkpad users you guys sure care a lot about cosmetic nothings. Me, I care about how it functions.

Yea well. Its part of the thinkpads appeal over other machines. They're too gaudy and flashy. But I do agree, I want a machine that works well - I just don't want to see lenovo on the LCD bezel -- thats teh stupidest location for it. I'm going to have to experiment with a black sharpie when my new T60 arrives...

That really so, eh?
What about the 1337 gamer that sticks tons of sticker crap on their multi-colored, lap-crusher of a laptop?
Or the Sony laptops that seem to care more about botique computing in a highly stylised consumer eletronics package with gadgets?
Or some of the Apple users that equate the good design of their systems to the performance of their new hardware? So much so to actually claim that the new G5s, with Xeons, are actually more powerful than the Dual and Quad PPC-powered G5s that came before them.
The Thinkpad image came about because of the ideals people associate with it, an image truly alone is nothing much of a force in most people's eyes. It stands out precisely because many engineers and designers put in very hardwork over decades to get the Thinkpad to a professional mobile platform for computing. The original design inspiration for the Thinkpad came from a Shokado Bento, a black Japanese lunch box. Then they took it from there.
Next time, consider how you would look with the same internals going into a meeting, but in a Dell XPS chassis covered with stickers. Then reflect on how functional that may be in conveying the sense that you are a "Professional" (and not a
Clan kiddie HaX0rz LAWLXOR) and convincing a group of Profs or Clients that they really should put their hard-earned resources behind your project.
Quite functional indeed...isn't it?

Wow, flashy blue lights! Looks like a disco thinkpad rather than a business thinkpad.
I don't want a white thinkpad. I want a transparent thinkpad and i can see all the internal components running. *in my dreams* Sigh!!!

If the laptop looked professional and it has the functions which i always expected to have, i don't really care about the number of stickers they are going to paste on the laptop. They can paste whatever stickers they want. Just as those stickers don't make a smudge on the LCD will do fine.

Posted: Mon Nov 06, 2006 4:38 am
by christopher_wolf
Nope, the stickers in that example were to be applied to a gaming laptop....That rules out most of the functionality associated with a Thinkpad. Large, hot, and minimal battery life are to be expected from such a gaming laptop and mobility isn't exactly in its vocabulary.
Stickers aside, people have put stickers on Thinkpads before, there is a reason a Thinkpad has never looked like that.
