Fn-F5 and Wireless - again!

In some previous msgs, I reported problems with Fn-F5 losing the Wireless option, and at one point was directed to a list of steps to get it back. But when I search for "F5" on this board, nothing comes up! Frustrating.

Anyway, yesterday, even though nothing has changed on my computer as far as I know, I started getting an error with Fn-F5 - "Unable to change the power state of the 802.11 adapter. Update the adapter." I went into Thinkvantage and ran about 7 recommended updates, including 802.11 drivers, but the problem persists. I had also already tried the Repair option in Add/Remove programs mentioned in another recent thread.

Why do things like this show up out of nowhere? And can someone point me to the post that explains how to fix this. It had to do with uninstalling and installing like 4 different things in a particular order.

Thanks -- Barbara

I'd call tech support at 800-IBM-SERV and they have a special option for "wireless." I've found them to be quite competent.

Barbara,

Get the MIGR for the software and device drivers for your thinkpad.

Download and Manually install the following drivers.
Uninstall Access Connections
Power Management
Hotkey
Wireless Lan Driver.

Your choice on reinstalling Access Connections.

That should fix your problem.

Another rare fix is if you are using the Intel brand of cards.

Go into add remove programs and find the intel program in it and choose repair. That might work also.

Hope this helps.

Mine's broken, too -- Atheros a/b/g on X31, with the latest wireless drivers, latest Access Connections, hotkey installed. Pressing Fn+F5 brings up the proper dialog, but clicking on "power off" does nothing. (Using the settings and automatically toggling power also results in no action being taken -- and no errors being displayed.

Tom,

Follow the same instructions.

Remember to manually install the drivers.

Uninstall Access Connections
Install
Power Manager
Hotkey
Wireless Driver

That should bring it back up and working.

Your choice once again on installing Access Connections. Every laptop i use. I just use windows zero config. Its simple and easy and if it breaks. Just stop and restart the service in Services.

Thanks -- it worked! I already had uninstalled Access Connections (like you, I prefer the Windows zero config wireless). and the hotkey as working fine. So the 10 things :) I did was to re-install power management driver and the wireless driver (I had tried the driver update before, but that had not worked).

I can now turn wireless off with Fn+F5 -- fabulous for airline travel! Kudos for the simple instructions ...
